About
Located in the immediate vicinity of the D-Day Landing beaches, the Mémorial de Caen visitor centre is among the essential sites focusing on the Battle of Normandy and 20th century history. From the origins of the Second World War to the end of the Cold War, museographical displays tell this terrible side of 20th century history. Indeed, Caen, bombarded during the summer of 1944, a liberated yet martyred city, deserved a tribute well worthy of the suffering it endured. This is precisely the purpose of the Mémorial de Caen, but via a continuing perspective and action aimed at reconciliation.

never again?
Oct 2020
Does the memorial help us to make sure such horrors do not occur again? That is the hope, of course.
The memorial tells the story from the end of WW I until 1945 as the main part, but then adds a few rooms and displays also about the cold war until the fall of the Berlin wall and the end of the URSS.
Displays are trilingual, well written, informative. Did Russian American and English atrocities (there were some, of course, on all sides) also receive mention ? Not that I recall. But they did simply not compare in scale and horror to those of Germany and Japan.
Four hours spent are still not enough to absorb it all, a second visit is recommended. Kids from 8 years onwards should be brought and taught about this period.

Excellent museum
Aug 2020
A fantastic museum which highlights all aspects of the second world war - the lead up to the conflict, the war itself worldwide (also in the pacific and China, which is fairly unique in Europe) and the aftermath. The German bunker is also impressive to see. Interesting films dotted around to watch.

Take time and try to see as much as you can
Aug 2020
This is a museum where you could spend hours. Both due to its size, and because of the interesting facts.
The start of the museum tour is very visual with you walking in a downward spiral and the room feels like it is getting darker and more cramped the further you go. On the walls you can read about the history that eventually ended up in the world war.
Lots of shorter films and a few longer ones. The museum does not only cover the D-Day, it covers war history both before and after the 1940's.
I would say that this is a good option if you can only fit in one museum in Normandy. However if you look for more specific D-Day history, there are some other options. Having said that, the D-Day section of the museum is very extensive as well.

Great Museum, though could have more local focus
Jul 2020
A fantastic museum with a lot to see with us spending 6 hours on site with an hour for lunch. I was only a bit disappointed with the comparative limited amount of material about Caen and Normandy during the campaign compared with the material from 1st world war, pre-war, 2nd world war, occupation & post war items. The Museum in Bastogne is similar providing context but has a higher proportion of content for the local events rather than general WW2 items.

Nice and very detailed museum
Jul 2020 • Family
This museum gives an excellent overview of the historic period from WW1 to the end of the Cold War. This museum is not only for the memorial of the D day invasion. The setup is very professional and lots of videos are presented. You need 4 hours minimum for this museum. There’s a restaurant inside and a lot of parking space.
