Bastille is the name for the neighborhood that surrounds the area where the French Revolution began. Though the stormed prison no longer exists, a square marks its former site and the July Column stands there, which commemorates the Revolution of 1830. The square, known as...More

Bastille is a lively hub for Paris, but it's not a particularly compelling tourist destination on its own. There is nothing to see except a large monument, the only tangible connection to the historic revolutionary site. Like others, I was hoping to see a prison...More

A large square marred by the traffic and ongoing construction. There is the modern opera house and quite a lot of restaurants around the periphery. Also just by the junction with Rue Saint Antoine, one can see the outline of the old Bastille prison with...More

Walked around the Place on a walking trip around the area. Steeped in history, where the prison used to be. You've got to do a fair bit of detour to get from one side to the other. Lots of busy bars and restaurants in the...More

I personally tick this place as one of my top visit when in France. Nothing fancy and elaborate decor that one can compare with other monuments in Paris. It’s the history. This is the place where it all began..the French Revolution. The guillotine. Mary Antoinette...and...More

Place de la Bastille is the former location of the notorious prison which was famously stormed and destroyed in the French Revolution, and today the outline of the prison is marked out on the pavement. Also in the Place is the Colonne de Juillet, a...More

If you come here looking for the Bastille, you will not find it. However, if you look carefully on the ground, you will see the brick outline of where it used to stand (hint: it is NOT in the roundabout). There is an impressive monument...More

Impressive because of its history, but today it’s an area with heavy traffic and not much to see. Close to nice shopping if you continue Bd Beaumarchais

You have to look beyond the traffic buzz as there is a lot of that. Lots of busy avenues come together here. And you have to look beyond the new opera house that is jammed into its small footprint. Then you will find lots of...More

Bastille / Oberkampf
Bastille and Oberkampf are lively parts of town made
for entertainment. During the day rows of unassuming
bars welcome customers for a bite or a drink, but it’s
at night this area really comes to life. Students and
young professionals fill the busy bars around Bastille
and Oberkampf. At Place de la Bastille, crowds flock
to the Opéra Bastille in the evening and groups wait
for coveted tickets during the day. Towards
