Tall green statue with a gold Mercury on top. It is not worth the extra trip, given all the other statues in Paris, but if you are there, it is certainly worth a few pictures.

About 650 years ago the first building was started-- as a part of Paris' defences. This was added to, and in the 18th century it became a much feared prison. In the late 18th century it was destroyed during an uprising by the populace/the French...More

This is a large, impressive square which is extremely busy as a major road junction. A tall column celebrates those who died in the 19c revolutions with individual names inscribed on the column. We found it to be a very exciting place.

Originally the Bastile was a fortress built by Charles V to defend the city, soon after it became a jail for political prisoners. This was the scene of the storming of the Bastille on 14th July 1789 and the start of the French revolution against...More

Large square area where the infamous prison once stood. All that is there now is the Colonne de Juillet, crowned with the “Genie de la Liberte” commemorating the Revolution of 1830. However, it is best known for the 1789 revolution at which time the prison...More

This was a short walk from the airb&b we were staying at. It is very active with lots of cafes shops and an outdoor market on certain days. Loved the energy and atmosphere.

Bastille and Oberkampf are lively parts of town made
for entertainment. During the day rows of unassuming
bars welcome customers for a bite or a drink, but it’s
at night this area really comes to life. Students and
young professionals fill the busy bars around Bastille
and Oberkampf. At Place de la Bastille, crowds flock
to the Opéra Bastille in the evening and groups wait
for coveted tickets during the day. Towards
