We firstly went round the area during the day on the little train that goes through the historic area starting at the Cathedral. The driver/guide gave a running commentory in French and English . We then went back on foot in the afternoon to look...More

We came to town to see the cathedral, but our hotel staff recommended walking around the old city. They gave us a very nice map which shows great areas to walk. We did so in the afternoon on a holiday, and we're glad we did....More

Chartres has more to offer than just visiting the cathedral. The building in which the tourist information is located is a stunning building, and staff are very helpful in suggesting a walk, as well as giving out maps, and stating opening times. Most of the...More

The place, the shops, bistros, cafes, and of course the cathedral. It is magnifique. The area is pedestrianized so it is easy to walk around. People are very friendly, and of course the time of year the lights are splendid. Just go there.

I was delighted to find this area of Chartres preserved. I had such fond memories of the historic sites and had been disappointed in the extent of commercialization in central Chartres in the last 30 to 40 years.

It is worth walking around and having a look at the rest of the town. There are some very narrow streets that make you feel in the year 1800 or so (I think). You can follow a nice route that will bring you via a...More

The old merchant shops, three story homes build with timber, cannels, water wheels and parks. Good walking paths for that after breakfast or dinner stroll.

If you come to Chartres for the cathedral it is worth your time to walk through the old town and get an appreciation for the city. I rented the audio tour from the visitors center. Keep your expectations low and you I'll enjoy it. I...More

This whole area is so well preserved with out just being a relic. The area is well occupied by workplaces and restaurants. Beautiful area which is vibrant.
