I had atrip to Dinan n Saint Malo. The first was a sojourn into middle ages. The second,a visit to a place of mystery n excitement.I was carried away by the first impression of seeing Etuile du Roy.History was graphically present with the supposed presence of Corsaires n Privateers ransacking the merchant ships in the sea of.the 16th to 19 th centuries.I heard the whispers of pirates in the ramparts of a prison city like Saint Malo, with its lanes,by-lanes,architectural marvels n museums.I was a glutton while I ate the mouth-watering seafood in Saint Malo restaurants.And.the provocating sea with beaches was just a heaven for visitors n tourists.I would request the tourists to pay a visit toSaint-Malo.And I have written in Bengali travel mag ofrepute.Finding or searching to write in a good English travel mag.Last of all I hav been greatly helped in my research by Trip Advisor. Thanks a lot to them.

The tour is offered in French only and without even notes in English for those whose French is less than degree level. Not a problem, as I speak good French but DO BE WARNED. Check first! We went because we have an interest in domestic architecture and we like to see how people live and lived back in time. We saw very little of that and thought the tour was inaccurately advertised by the flyer in the tourist office. Instead we had a knowledgeable lecturer (rather than guide) but, frankly, I learnt nothing I did not already know about seafaring at the time (trading and warfare) and the French / British at war. The small part of the house that visitors get to see is tired and far from well maintained . Finally, I discerned some strong anti-'English' sentiment that I have never before experienced, both from the guide and even as we paid our entrance fee ... and it didn't feel appropriate, even if it was meant in jest.

This house is the original mansion of one of Saint Malo's 18th century "corsairs" (French king's privateer). It is one of the few buildings not destroyed during WWII in old Saint-Malo, and it is a fine example of such Saint Malo houses. What made our visit so outstanding was its guide and guided tour. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. He drew for us a very vivid picture of what Saint-Malo was like in its heyday, in the 18th century. We learned so much: What a "corsair" really was, what international trade was like in that era, how it operated, complete with display of the traded goods, and fascinating information on business and corruption at the time. We also learned how naval war was waged back then. And this too was fascinating and enlightening. Finally, we got a good idea of what life was like was like for the inhabitants of the city in the 18th century.. Physically speaking, we got to visit the ground floor of the six floor mansion, a secret stairway and mezzanine, and the impressive cellars. My only disappointment was that we did not get to see more of the mansion. However, even without that, the visit was incredibly interesting and entertaining. Definitely worth it. It turned out to also be one of my son's favorite visits during our stay in the area.
