About
Sprotbrough Lock is one of the loveliest spots of the canal. Next to 17th Century pub, the Boat Inn, its grassy banks are within an area of outstanding natural beauty and this special place is an extremely popular spot for a Sunday stroll, a leisurely bike ride, a peaceful fish or just to lie back and gaze up at the sky and watch the birds.

Pleasant walk in better weather but somewhat muddy and slippery in the late autumn to spring period. A very good job is done by Canal and River Trust keeping the track in reasonable shape. Unfortunate that people still drop litter in places like this.,

Got parked Ok ( near Boat Inn - now closed ) . Had a pleasant walk down the canal side to the River Don . The pathway is a worn track and easy to walk (few puddles) and then in to the countryside as far as you want to walk . We walked for about 2 miles before returning & when back to the car, crossed the road bridge to see Sprotboro Falls . You can walk down the side of the Falls although it is difficult to get to the waterside but worth it for the views .
All in all a good afternoon 👍

I have lived in Doncaster for most of my life but have never been here before. We parked the car at the side of the canal and had a steady stroll down to the locks. The walking was easy and we watched a narrowboat coming through the lock. We then walked over the bridges and walked along the river bank to the bottom of the weir. The walking here was much harder, not suitable for a wheelchair or buggy. Plenty of wildlife to be seen. A great place to be on a hot, summer's day.

There is obviously a lot of hard work goes into keeping these areas in such good shape. Tidy and attractive area for walking

Nice and steady walk. East access and in effort. Few sights to see. Plenty of dog walkers, cyclists.

We went for a sunday lunch today at The boat Inn, Sprotborough. We had been looking for a decent place where we both my husband and I could eat as I am vegan and he is not. This place says it has menus for both requirements so we booked for a 1.30pm table.
To begin with the parking was atrocious, there was literally cars everywhere and lots of signs telling you that the car park was monitored and if you parked out of a space you would be fined. Also you have to give your car registration to the bar when you go in so they can identify who is a customer and who is not. We understood this and were okay with it, but not with the difficulty of parking.
We went into the pub and my husband dutifully went to the bar to give our car registration while I went to claim our booked table. Two girls were chatting, albeit it seemed to be about the pub, but neither acknowledged me at all, so after a couple of minutes, when they had finished their chat, one finally asked me if I had booked. Yes I told her, gave my name and the time of the table. She then showed me to a teeny tiny table almost in the main drag of the pub and pushed up against a wall. I asked if there were any larger tables as this one seemed so small. She told me no, as the other tables were booked, I asked why we couldn't sit at another available larger one and was told no again, that someone else was coming in for that one in half an hour. She then curtly said 'Where do you expect me to put you'. So we capitulated and squeezed ourselves into the little table. My chair was very loose, and I spent most of the time waiting for it to break and dump me on the floor. My husbands chair was very low and although he looked quite amusing sitting on it, it wasn't really acceptable as a dining chair.
Right, so the table is booked for 1.30, we finally finished at 3.00, that's one and a half hours, a generous 20minutes was spent eating. The rest of the time was waiting and waiting and waiting. The service was dreadful, and yes they were very busy, but we watched our drinks sitting on the bar along with someone else's coffee, which must have been cold by the time it was picked up and taken to the recipient. Then we waited for my vegan menu, which despite me sending them a message saying I was vegan, they gave me the general menu with no vegan options and I had to ask. I'm just saying a good eatery would have clocked the message and been prepared, a little thing I know but niggly none the less.
Some of the vegan menu was not available and I ended up with a tart, some broccoli and new potatoes. My husband opted for the roast beef. When it eventually turned up mine was a plate of dry food. The pastry on the tart was very tasty but the filling was like an afterthought. It had no liquid with it, just dry vegetables plonked in the pastry case. The broccoli which was supposed to be with chipotle sauce was more like a sweet sticky jam and the boiled new potatoes were just that, so dry and unappetising. However, I was starving and chomped my way through most of it.
Hubbies was adequate, his roasties were burnt on one side and raw on the other, the Yorkshire pudding was tiny compared to others we had seen being delivered to other tables, he had two slices of beef, and some cabbage and gravy. The one redeeming feature were very overdone parsnips which he didn't mind.
When we got the bill, not having been asked if we would like a dessert, we paid and left. No 'I hope you enjoyed your meal', or ' Was everything okay?', no the delightfully morose waitress just took the money and disappeared.
We won't return to this place, it promised a lot but delivered very little. A shame as it was busy and I can only assume the people eating there were enjoying the fare dished up to them, we did not.

We came across this area whilst out looking for a place to have an 80th Birthday lunch for relative. The building doesnt disappoint. They have downstairs wheelchair friendly toilets, a log fire and it is a dog friendly venue. The food we had was lovely. We have booked for our upcoming Birthday celebration after driving around the countryside for the past few weekends looking for a nice venue. The Treat Menu for the Saturday meal, is great value.

Huge improvements in the quality of the water and tidying up of the area generally mean that this is a very pleasant walk. Irritatingly blocked off over this summer.

Nice scenic walk with the family and to take your dog. Enjoyable way to take in fresh air. Not too taxing.
