I'd long intended to visit Calke Abbey, so was particularly pleased it turned out to be as good as I hoped it would be. It isn't an abbey, although many centuries ago a Priory stood on the spot the house now occupies. The house itself...More

A lovely day out, lots too look at, places to walk and things to do. The children 11, 7 and 6 year olds all enjoyed going around the house - although the staff didn't particuarly engage with them which was a shame as they were...More

Second time visiting, still interesting and spotted more on this visit. Rooms in the house have great character, the volunteers in the more important rooms have interesting information on the previous owners. Extensive collection of stuffed animals which about half had to be sold to...More

Especially interesting because it was left just like it had been and not done up at all. A bit spooky with the extensive collection of stuffed animals. Collector gone mad. Never been anywhere quite like this. A must for knowledge of how-it-all-used-to-be.

Fascinating opportunity to see first hand the social decline of what had been a huge estate and house in Elizabethan times, to one of near destitution in the early twentieth century. Fortunes gained through marriage, and squandered on obsessions whilst their servants endured real hardship....More

So on an exceptionally busy day women had to queue for 30 mins to use one of the 8 toilets available. Shocking state of affairs given the amount of people there. Also toilets near the picnic area also shut... Why go here when you can...More
