There might be a good monkey story behind the history of Lynch’s Castle but an attraction it is not! We walked straight past it in our first attempt to see the castle as the reality is that it is now a bank with an ATM...More

This place is literally just a bank now- it's a nice building to walk past on Shop Street, but I didn't even realise that it was a historic building of any sort until much later since the AIB sign is on the building

I don't know what to tell you - the thing is an Allied Irish Bank. ATMs are conveniently located to the side and it is an excellent landmark to meet people at. Also there is a monkey holding a baby.

I made an error in my post about the Lynch Castle. I wrote that I did not believe that Lynch hanged his own son but apparently he did hang his son, believed guilty of a local murder.

Really interesting history to the AIB Bank building. Fantastic original features still preserved on the outside & the entrance to the bank. Worth a pop-in.

You’ll need a tour guide to explain the history of Lynch Castle - fortunately we had Brian Nolan of Galway Walking tours to give us the stories of the Lynch family and Castle. It’s right on Shop Street so you can’t miss it while walking...More

Fascinating story about the monkey and the infant. Lynch was a prominent family in Galway but Lynch's wife was unable to conceive a child, much to the family's grief. Lynch, who traveled extensively, brought back a monkey as pet. Then 7 years into marriage Lynch's...More

You definitely need a travel guide to tell you what this is. It is now a bank so no one goes in unless you are a customer. We walked right by it the first time before realizing that it had historical significance.

it is a very small antechamber of a bank housed in history house, but it was interesting to hear of the Norman occupiers story.

Dear Nancy, I recently posted an answer to your question about the monkey carving at Lynch Castle, having just been to Ireland myself in June 2018.
