2014 marks 25 years of Ireland's most famous live music venue. Back in 1989, while all of the above was happening, the old Bourke's pub (run by a cantankerous individual of the same name by all accounts) was completely refurbished, extended and reopened as Whelans. However, a public house existed here as far back as 1772 with the premises changing hands many times throughout this period. The first gig ever was organised by the Kevin Street SU Ents Officer at the time Lisa Tinley and the band featured was the Subterraneans. 25 Very Special Years..... Under the ownership of Frank Gleeson, Whelans has grown and blossomed into a vital hub for the Irish music lover. His ethos was to create a platform that would nurture young Irish talent and at the same time, cater for international stars. Whelan's has continued to develop but never losing its identity. That's what makes Whelan's the legendary venue that it is. 2014 marks 25 years of Dublin's original and most famous live music venue. 25 years filled with wonderfully diverse musical nights. The venue has gone from strength to strength with two live music stages under the one roof. But one thing hasn't changed, the famous atmosphere generated in Whelan's that has forged its place in both customers and artist's hearts. Indeed many artists consider Whelans among the best venue's they have ever played of any size and continue to come back, even when they can easily fill larger spaces. Our newest addition The Parlour, opened in August 2011. It has been a resounding success as both a function room and a place for musicians and members to enjoy some drinks after playing a show........ Over the years the task of keeping the musical ethos of Whelans intact has fallen to the head bookers. David Allen was the first of these nurturing Whelans in its infancy when he started in 1990 until he left in late 1999. The baton was handed to the legendary Derek Nally who unfortunately passed away in 2010. Derek shared the responsibilities with John Hennessy initially and from 2006 Leagues O Toole came on board. Leagues has since gone on to promote the Harmonic series of events for Aiken promotions. David Allen returned to the fold in 2010 and is now looking forward to working on making the 25th anniversary a year to remember... Whelan's was the location for the filming of PS I Love You....

Nice place , prices a bit steep... staff a little too laid back for how busy it was! But what a gig, intimate but big enough to get the big crowd in!! There are a couple of different 'rooms' with different things on.

This bar is filled with great beer, live music, and a great atmosphere. I visited this pub with some friends on a Thursday night and the place was absolutely packed.

Went to the silent disco last Tuesday night and had a great time, if one thing was to improve I'd ask for more club or pop music to be played as deep house or heavy rap isn't for everyone, other than that all was sound
