The bronze statues in Dublin are fantastic. They are all over the place. The most famous is Molly the fair lady of Dublin, who according to the legend sold the shrimps during the day and herself at night. Hower, there are very many other like several versions of Oscar Wilde, James Jouce some starving people of just two ordinary ladies. They are all in almost one-to-one scale and you are invited to interact with them, and many do. For example, sit on the same bench as Oscar Wilde or on his lap, try to talk to James Jouce and touch the breast of Molly

I'm glad that I saw it, but, I wish I'd known beforehand (maybe I should have read reviews, haha!) that it's a touristy and/or customary thing to get your picture taken with your hands on... certain parts of her. One of the things I loved so much about Ireland was how the art and statues and memorials are all RIGHT THERE and you can get so close, and touch things, really feel the weight of history. But for this? The poor woman. It was kind of sad to see a bunch of drunk people, or people egging each other on, or people making their KIDS go up and grab her, just for a photo op. The statue itself was a work of art. The tourists? Not so much.

I guess the question is… who was Molly Malone?
Some say Molly Malone is a fictional character who never existed. Others say Molly Malone represents Peg Plunkett, a powerful business woman who owned her own brothel. You’ll have to research and opine yourself. One thing is certain, a lot of people have touched Molly’s boobs.
The Molly Malone Statue, located in Dublin, Ireland, is
a popular landmark. The statue depicts a fishmonger Molly Malone, a character from the famous Irish folk song "Cockles and Mussels." Unveiled in 1988 and sculpted by Jeanne Rynhart, the statue has become an iconic symbol of Dublin.

Hidden in the back streets of the city, she stands alone. I didnt actually realise the statue was so young (only built 50 years ago). There was a tour there at the same time so we managed to hear a bit of info. We’d just been at the Temple Bar and sang her song so it was quite apt. Sad to see where areas have worn on her.

Dublin without Molly is unthinkable, I can't help it and have to go see her every time. She is as much a part of Dublin's soul as her song.
If you are lucky enough to meet the right street musician before that.
By the way, she is no longer on Grafton Street but on the corner of Suffolk Street and St. Andrews Street.
Apparently it has also become a tradition to grab the statue. Everyone can think what they want, but despite all the fun, I don't think it's in keeping with the times. Respect, dear tourists.

Worth a quick visit to watch all the tourists queueing to have their photos taken by the nice lady and the men cheekily rubbing her expansive bosom. I waited quite some time to take a photo without all the crowds of people. She's quite easy to find and the way there is well signposted.

I usually don't review statues but I found the story behind the statue, including the song, interesting so I would recommend checking out the statue. It's on every postcard with Dublin highlights so you should be able to explain to you friends what the statue is about. Molly Malone is also the subject of Dublin's song "Cockles & Mussels)

This bronze sculpture pays hommage to the fictional character of Molly Malone. It is situated along Suffolk Street in Dublin in front of the Tourist Information Office. It was relocated here from it's original site on the bottom of Grafton Street, to make room for the Luas transport system.
Molly Malone is immortalised in a song which tells how, during the day, she wheeled her barrow through the streets of Dublin, selling cockels and mussels. She was reportedly back on the streets during the night providing a different service.
The statue is a popular landmark with tourists and is a photo opportunity, so rather difficult to get a photograph on it's own. The chest area of the sculpture is very shiny as result of people posing for photographs and rubbing this part of the sculpture, possibly for luck or comical effect.
The 13th June has been declared Molly Malone Day and the song is Dublin's unofficial anthem.

A beautiful statue, depicting a popular (fictional) character of song, minutes from Trinity College in Dublin. As the song begins, “In Dublin’s fair city, where the girls are all pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone.” Only the most jaded tourist wouldn’t make time for a photo stop at this iconic sculpture. (But good luck getting a photo without someone hanging on the statue or rubbing Molly’s breasts for good luck! Photographers, be patient!)

It is a very beautiful work of art... based on Dublin's fishmongers. And Molly herself is not a real life person. But she looks real!
This is a must do photo opportunity!. Combine it with other sights in the area. The Book of Kells is just around the corner. This statue is in a quiet side street next to Grafton street- shopping street. The area around the statue looks like it came out of a storybook.
Let's face it. Molly has ample assets and those assets shine not because the city polished them to showcase them but because tourist, mostly men, tend to rub them! Good luck? Or getting to do something without pain? 😁
Molly was not sculpted by a man but by a woman sculpture. So those assets were not base on some male concepts.
Highly suggested to drop by for a quick stop (depending on the number of people there- I arrived at 7 a.m. to avoid the crowds I saw the day before) in conjuction with other opportunities. If you are going home that day and have checked out, there is a visitor's center around the corner near Molly (not the one behind Molly where you can leave your luggage for a small fee.

PARKING NEAR MOLLY MALONE:
I am planning a visit next year to see Molly Malone statue, Old Library of Trinity College, Book of Kells, and several other points of interest close by. Where is the best place to park a car for an hour or two in this area?
Written 12 October 2018
There is street parking, you pay at the corner and get a paper to put on your dash board. We never had a problem finding a place to park.
