We loved visiting the jail. The docent was terrific and the exhibitions were great history. The stories of the 1916 uprising set the perfect tone for this Victorian nightmare. The tiny dungeon like cells were terrifying.

We turned up at the gaol to find that there were no spaces left on the guided tour of the prison but were invited to visit the museum which is free of charge. The displays and exhibits here told the stories around the gaol, the...More

The guided tour of the prison is excellent! We had Mike and he clearly knew his stuff. He spoke well and slow enough for non English speakers to understand, and answered all questions positively and with a serious passion for his job! The booking process...More

An excellent tour that went for just the right amount of time for a good overview of the history of the gaol & Ireland around that time. The information given by our tour guide was thorough and delivered with passion and she definitely had a...More

Such a great and informative tour! Our guide, Martha, did such an amazing job teaching us all about the history of the jail. Would definitely recommend visiting on a trip to Dublin!

We heard about this place in advance and booked our tickets with a timed slot. On the day we went, it wasn't particularly busy but I presume at peak times booking in advance is necessary. A good, interesting tour on this hugely important slice of...More

Everyone raved about the Gaol tour, so we signed up. I found it slow and boring. Go into detail about the rising inmates in detail, which is important if you are Irish, but less so as an American. History lesson was interesting, but again, too...More

Enjoyed the tour, very informative and a good historical overview to set the stage for our trip through Ireland. I was glad I booked online as they were turning folks away at the door who hadn’t. Recommend!

We were shut out of this activity because they we’re completely booked weeks in advance. If you are going to Dublin. Get your place before getting there. Wish we had known.

I’d say about 2 hrs. The tour I believe is a good hour long. That’s just the tour with the guide. If you want to walk around the museum part and then the cafe. I’d set aside time for that as well.

I would take my 9 year old. It’s a great historical tour and I think a child that age would enjoy the prison setting and checking out the cells. There is nothing inappropriate for children in the tour, though it does cover... More
