The road northwards from Donegal Town through Barnesmore Gap in the Bluestack mountains is one of the great scenic routes in Ireland. Bearnas Mor, the "Big Gap" was created by a glacier, which carved a wide, deep valley in the mountain range. This highway has always been of strategic importance as a geographic link between the north and south of the county.

Raw and wild and quite mesmerising as you drive through on a spring day.............obviously the Gap would take on a different coat in the summer/winter but truly magnificant..........

Used to do this regularly-its beauty never got old. Mountains towering over the road, old railway visible and a stream gushing along the road. Best drive!

It's an iconic view of Donegal - one of many. It's reckoned to "divide" the North of the County from the South. Locals joke that true Donegal only starts here, anything further south in the County being more North Sligo than true Donegal. What people...More

I think the best views are when driving down into the gap from Ballybofey to Donegal town. There are similar drives all over the British Isles, especially in Scotland. The mountains either side of the road rise steeply but for sheer majesty my favourite is...More

Barnesmore Gap translated from Irish means the "big gap", and its situated in the Bluestack Mountains between Donegal town and Ballybofey. The Donegal railway used to run through here, connecting south and north Donegal. It's a beautiful drive, but can be treacherous in bad weather....More

We stopped at biddys pub right in middle of gap. Authentic irish pub with open fire drinks and snacks. If on that road do call in. We enjoyed very much

What a beautiful place to drive through. Currently unspoiled by much habitation. The mountains rise majestically on each side as one passes. The mist only adds to the mystery!
