About
Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of this forest particularly the Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path around the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

My favourite walk. Good clear paths and large carpark. It's an easy walk through beautiful Scottish pine forest and the air smells brilliant.

What a lovely place - Breathtaking! The only thing I found disappointing when returning to my car was the abuse the car parking attendant was having to put up with from a man in a camper van. All credit to the attendant.....remained polite and calm. If in Aviemore again will certainly return to Loch An Eileen.

I had a lovely walk around the loch taking in the beautiful scenery and some amazing wildlife including red squirrels! Calm and relaxing, an ideal place to get away from everything and lose yourself in natural beauty and stunning views. No hills it’s a very easy circular walk which is well signposted all the way round, you can walk or cycle.

The car park is just a few minutes from the main road and is well signposted – we were greeted with a friendly smile (Chris) and he was very helpful answering all of our questions, I wish everyone was this friendly we chatted for several minutes and I was able to pay by card as well. Very reasonable price for what you get, will definitely recommend to friends and I’ll be back soon.

Many happy memories at this Loch. Easy location with onsite parking, toilets, and a little shop.
Done a couple of swims here too, most recently todays swim in the snow! Camped overnight and woke up to an inch or two of snow which was fantastic!
Swam over to the castle and back. Chilly ☃️

Totally beautiful place for a lovely walk. Very tranquil and peaceful. Also highly recommend the shop! Gorgeous coffee and sells loads of beautiful handmade things. The homemade wreaths are stunning. All made my the owner. We also saw a few birds and wildlife

So beautiful could sit here for hours and enjoy the calm, peaceful views. The Loch was so settled and there is a woodland walk beside it! A great stop to visit and enjoy!

Lovely place to visit, so give yourself plenty of time. Our dogs loved the shallows and when we went it was very quiet.
We also discovered the White Croft company, running from a tiny cottage near the lake. Full of lovely knick-knacks it’s run by Hazel who is super-friendly and clearly enjoys her job. Taking items and up cycling them using natural materials she produces lovely craft items.
Will definitely visit again when in the area.

One of my favourite walks. This was the first time we have been in summer so were able to walk in evening. Lovely and peaceful but we enjoyed it so much that we went again during the day. Our dog was out in front looking for water and streams so we could throw her a stone into water and she had plenty of new. sniffing to do. All done with a wagging tail.

Great walk around the Loch, nice and quiet and has great views. We did the added extra Loch, which isn't advertised on the leaflet but is via a t junction half way round. Car parking is reasonable and you can't really complain at £1.50 per person.

We went there late August 2021. What a place! Stunningly beautiful and relaxing. Very much an experience not to be missed and one very much to be repeated. Ended with visit to a superb craft shop run by Hazel where we got some really splendid and USEFUL mementoes. We'll be back!
