About
Scotland Street School Museum, a working school until the late 1970s, hosts regular fun family events. It offers a fascinating insight as to what school days were like in the reign of Queen Victoria, during World War II, and in the 1950s and 60s, in three reconstructed classrooms. Architecturally significant, the school was designed by Scotland's most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. His designs for the school are on display. Refreshments can be taken in the Willow Cafe.

We have been to many similar places to the Scotland Street School Museum and we were disappointed following our visit to this one.

On arrival, we were not greeted by anyone despite there being a reception to the right hand side. There were no sign posts to explain where to go or what was within the site. A route through the museum could have easily been signposted to guide visitors.

We chose to do a self guided tour and there were information boards within particular rooms which were informative although it was difficult to work out which blank doors contained exhibition areas and which did not. We appeared to arrive shortly before a guided tour was beginning as many families were in the main area waiting.

For us, this lack of information and direction was all somewhat off putting and we decided to end our visit early.

For fans of Charles Rennie Mackintosh this is a must, the outside is jawbreakingly thrilling then you go inside. Its a school museum, so there will be lots of children there, but found peace and quiet whilst I walked around. There is a very high content of education as it was when the school opened until closing, lots of hand drawn plans to again wonder at. I love this building, its windows, walls, designs, gates, everything!!

Scotland Street School was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh between 1903-1906. It is Charles Rennie Mackintosh stunning school building. The proportions of the building are beautiful, and the windows wonderfully illuminate the interior. Now as a museum, it tells the story of 100 years of education in Scotland, from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. Interesting to see classrooms from Victorian times. A very nice place to visit, especially for kids. The entry is free. The employees there are very knowledgeable and welcoming. If you like Charles Renee Mackintosh and are in Glasgow this is a must. Beautiful building and easy enough to get to by the metro.

Loved this museum, very easy to get around, plenty of information in each room. Staff very helpful and friendly. The museum has a lift to all the floors. Will definitely return either at the weekend
or school holidays because a couple of rooms were being used for school visit the day I went but this was not a problem will be quite happy to go again.

Quite a nostalgic visit, myself and three sisters went to Scotland street school when we stayed in shields road. That part of shields road no longer exists due to the M8 motorway. I only managed to primary two, but eldest sisters made it all the way through before it closed. One of which is in the photo that was the last one taken of the pupils. Such a beautiful building, not ashamed to say had so many emotions and memories flooding back. Took lots of pictures of the aerial shots as they showed what the area used to look like and where we stayed. Highly recommended this for a couple of hours. A great Glasgow gem, one of many in our fabulous city. Mind get your free parking ticket from the museum I'f you park in the subway zone.

We went in December 2013. Many of the classrooms were "closed for refurbishment" - but no work was being done. There was a "bathing belle" exhibition that must have cost less than £10 to prepare. Of course there were a few staff hanging around, looking disinterested, but none adding value. All in all, you can see everything in less than 30 minutes. Oh - and don't bank on the food / drink being any good.

I took my nephew who is 8 here on Sat 8th July. The museum is right across the road from Sheilds Road subway station. We stay in Partick, so was very easy and fast to get to.

When we arrived at the museum, we were greeted by a nice man who explained what each floor contained and gave us a map so we could find our way around. It was free entry too, which was great.

Each floor had lots to see and do. My nephew loved dressing up in the old uniform and seeing the different classrooms from years past.

When on the 2nd floor when we were looking in the classrooms/cookery room, we bumped into the man who had been on the desk from earlier. He showed my nephew how to play an old game and showed us the belt. He made us feel very welcome and chatted to us for a while. Very nice man.

At 1:30 we went to the arts and crafts area where my nephew made a 3D space man which will be added to the 50's/60's classroom rocket in September.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic day out not only for the kids but for the adults too. I would highly recommend.

Visited with friends, one of whom spent her early years at the school. Easy to travel to using the underground as the station is opposite the school.Designed by Charles Rennie McIntosh it puts modern school boxes in the shade. From entering the school you will say I remember that and it will bring memories of your school days flooding back. Our friends had previously taken their grandson who had a great time so it is an enjoyable place for children although they may not believe that we did not have computers!

My wife and I were just wrapping up a fantastic 3 week visit around Scotland and decided to venture here during our last 2 days in Glasgow.

After an easy 20 minute walk to the school from our hotel, the site is still visually stunning. Prior to going inside the school, we walked around the outside and were amazed at how well preserved the site was.

We went inside and eagerly turned over the recommended £5 donation while being greeted by a very friendly gentleman who explained a few “nice to knows” before we started exploring on our own.

There was lots to see and read which made it very interesting. We particularly enjoyed the video in the “School Days Exhibition” room which showed former students talking about their experiences while attending the school.

We spent several hours here and thoroughly enjoyed our visit!
