Really enjoyed this tour. Allan is quietly charismatic and the tour feels as though he is sharing his knowledge and first-hand experiences rather than lecturing through a script. I've lived in Edinburgh for 30 years but this tour introduced me to places and stories that...More

I joined the book lover's tour on my own while my husband was working. I loved every minute. Alan took us to sites I never would have even known existed. He definitely knows his stuff!

Great fun, interesting, thought-provoking. Info on Conan-Doyle, Robert Burns, J.K.Rowling, Sir Walter Scott and others. A really good way of seeing bits of Edinburgh you'd not see otherwise, too. The bigger picture of literary Edinburgh and lots of little nuggets of information, too.

For lovers of literature, Allan Foster, offers one of the best walking tours I have done - and I have done many. The places we visited were very pertinent and the sories Mr Foster told were both relevant, interesting, always entertaining. The personal stories Mr...More

The wet weather had obviously deterred people so there were only two on this tour (me and one other) but Allan still spent 90 minutes walking us around the southside of the City - starting outside The Writers Museum and finishing at the Greyfriars Bobby...More

Tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. He took us for a 90 minute tour of some important places to do with Conan Doyle, Walter Scott, Robert Burns and more recent authors such as Rowling and McCall Smith. The tour is only on once a week...More

If you love to read, especially literature by Scottish literary giants through the ages, then you will greatly enjoy Allan Foster's walking tour. He is entertaining and knowledgeable; combining wit, candour and little - known facts to take you on a (approximately) 90 minute taste...More

A great way to escape the Royal Mile and, to be honest, a lot more engaging than the Writers' museum where the tour departs. If you're interested in any of the authors the tour references, it's certainly worthwhile, and even if you're not, the unusual...More

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the
