We came upon this museum by chance on a walk up the Royal Mile and were surprised at just how good it is. It tells the stories of real people in Edinburgh: where they worked, what they wore, how they spent their free time. It's...More

We stumbled into this unassuming museum after our tea at Clarinda's. Lovely tribute to the people who made/make Edinburgh what it is! We loved all of the personal interviews and ephemera. It was really excellent. It could do with some sprucing up, though, and perhaps...More

I would highly recommend that you visit this museum when in Edinburgh. It will only take 30 mins of your time but it will give you a real insight as to the story of the people of Edinburgh. It’s free and the staff are wonderful....More

I popped over to the People's Story venue after visiting The Museum of Edinburgh. This is a very interesting venue which focuses on the people of Edinburgh, the contribution of workers' movements to the people's welfare and brief histories of different occupations over time. The...More

I know it's free and congrats to Edinburgh council for providing cultural venues but this museum badly needs a freshen-up. It looks as if it hasn't been touched for ten years or more. The wax figures belong in a past age of museums and the...More

It's Free, it's for real, it's the authentic story of the ordinary people of Edinburgh / Leith. The staff are knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. Go visit right now! ( Ok not Mondays or Tuesdays) but soon!

This free (as most in Scotland) museum tells you lots of wonderful stories about ordinary people and how they managed to live years ago. It's maybe not that big and interesting like The National Museum, but it has for sure its own charm. There wasn't...More

I really quite enjoyed my visit here. I was impressed from the off thanks to some atmospheric sound effects in the first section and while this doesn't keep up until the end, the models that are on display are of a pretty decent quality and...More

Interesting free museum situated in the Tolbooth building in the Canongate. Mannequins and mock up rooms and situations help to bring the 'People's Story' alive.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the
