Good food and nice venue. Christmas menu is £16.95 for 2 courses. Food very good but quite pricey for lunch. Sea bass was excellent.

Sorry, can’t agree with other reviewers. Maybe Bistro had an off-day. Mussels to start, shrunken, miserable, many closed. Main course cold, ‘medium’ steak could have been revived by a good vet. Blanquette de dinde 100% taste-free. Dessert OK after we got the plastic off. Asked...More

I’ve been traveling for three weeks now, eating out every meal. What I really wanted was a piece of grilled whitefish and a green salad. But... I saw the sign for steak frites and I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I walked up...More

This is the Bistrot by Patisserie Maxime at the Institut Français, West Parliament Square. We went in during the Edinburgh Festival for a wine-down after an event. It was not at all crowded at 7pm, and we got prompt service, a nice wine, and two...More

I would surely not recommend this place. French arrogance as pure as one can get. No real value in terms of culture or course; local universities provide a much better service if you're interested in learning French. There's nothing one can get here which can...More

Very happy to hear that you enjoyed your experience at the Institut français last year. If you're in Edinburgh for the festival, please visit our new premises on West Parliament Square (at the top of the Royal Mile). The café is as cozy as ever!

Bonjour! We've moved and are now at the top of the Royal Mile (West Parliament Square). And we've got a bistrot open all year round now. Please visit for a glass of wine and stay for one of our Fringe shows!

Hi Bonetti, If you're still in Edinburgh, please pay the Institut a visit and check out the new bistrot, which is now open all year long. Admittedly, it still only takes cash, but they should have their card payment system operational soon.

Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly

that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
