Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle is amazing! So much history in that place. We’ll set out and many displays to interest everyone. Don’t miss it, you won’t be sorry.

This was so lovely! My husband and I are massive history buffs and the castle is just so interesting. An amazing setting as well with the great views of the city. Some wonderful artefacts on display too.

It was just average. For the cost (£18) of entry, I was really expecting something special. However I didn’t feel that it had anything to draw the crowds. Yes the views are pretty and there is a wealth of history here, but it took us...More

So much to see wandering around the castle and grounds. We spent close to three hours here, and I feel like we could have spent even more time. Tour gives a great overview. Highly recommend starting with it to get an overview and general history.

A must when visiting Edinburgh. Took 2 hours to get around and the views of the city are magnificent. Lots of exhibitions within the castle too.

Take the half hour guided tour included in the entrance fee as this gives a good background and then select which aspects to explore further at your leisure. Fantastic views as well.

A good activity while you are in Edinburgh, a lot of history to learn about, I enjoyed walking through the war-gallery.

You can't not go to the castle on a trip to Edinburgh. Full of Scottish history and an amazing structure. We decided to buy an audo guide but, unless you want to delve really deeply into the history, you can actually get all the information...More

This place is great for scenery, but other than that..... The steps to get up here were exhausting! If you had trouble with steps or steep hills - take your time when you get here. Please don’t rush. But honestly I was just a bit...More
