Top ways to experience Waverley Mall and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Whatever you do, don’t use the loos in the Food Court area! Not only are they unclean & desperately in need of a makeover, but someone had defecated on the floor of one of the cubicles in the
ladies! They are the worst public toilet facilities that I have ever visited in my life. I googled the centre management telephone number to report this but, lo and behold, the call went unanswered. I managed to find a staff member & reported it to him. I am not quite sure how a charge of 30p (in my case, 40p as no change is given) is warranted for ‘facilities’ that are clearly not maintained to even the most basic standard. Horrified to say the least.

Had an ups grade. Plenty food outlets and quirky shops. Sainsbury’s outside heading to station. Toilets in lower section are 30p to use but clean. Also there is a reasonable luggage point secure bag storage on lower mall. Lady was lovely. Cost us £12 for whole day for large family suitcase and one large hold all. Cheaper than train station. Note it shuts at 6pm so collect by 5:45pm.

As a family of 3 it is very expensive and stressful to go to the toilet here! Card payment only that only works have the time. It would be nearly a pound to go to the toilet. There was no signage to help. In the toilet and it wasn't even very clean. I would expect that a toilet that costs would have a better standard!!! No one should have to pay for the toilet!!!

Disgusting toilets. I didn’t have 30p. Went in behind someone without paying. When I came out a bossy, jobsworth woman worker shouted and harassed me and escorted me out of mall. Others had not paid but she singled me out. I'm black. I spent thousands visiting from London. Put me off Edinburgh for good. My wife was furious with me but the heavy handed treatment was out of order. I’d just spent a lot of money in the mall so it was the principle. I complained to Visit Scotland. No satisfactory response. I am now advising people not to visit Waverley.

I have never see toilets so dirty, over flowing sanitary bin, two toilets out of order yet they expect 30p it was disgusting 🤢 litter all over toilet floor and around the sink area, yes it’s the public who litter and make mess but it’s a damn disgrace we have to pay to use disgusting facilities when these toilet attendants are hanging about outside !!! Try going inside to see the mess !!

A handy small mall as it is next to the train station.

I feel it is aimed more for visitors than locals. We tend to always pop in while in Edinburgh.

Not a big range of shops but better to drop in for a quick bite or coffee.

Just back from a weekend in Edinburgh, where i found a new venue for Real Ale drinkers and Gin enthusiasts,This venue is situated in the Waverley Mall shopping centre and has only been open for a few weeks, they have a great selection of bottled Scottish real ales and a large selection of Gins from the Lilliard Distillery,my main reason for entering the premises was to sample the Real Ales on Draught, they have 3 from their own Brewery Born in the Borders and 3 from the Tempest Brewery which is also in the borders area, also on Draught was a cider from Thistly Cross, the chap in charge was Tony who is a fantastic guy and very enthusiastic about all the products(Not a pushy salesman) he was offering samples of the products on sale, just ask for a taster and try before you buy,the premises on the lower level is also a coffee shop,so why not give it a try as we found it a very friendly place and will definitely be back again, thanks Tony,Gerry and Christine Greenock.

My son’s girlfriend wanted to buy whisky for a friend. She is Korean and I accompanied her to help. We were staggered by the high prices, but in the end she paid £46 for the cheapest bottle, Bowmore 12 year old. It’s a very large sum for her and she felt unhappy enough to check online, finding that Tesco offer the same whisky at £27. We went back in hope of a refund. This was refused, normal retail practice so no surprise. What shocked me though was the attitude of the three staff members. They were openly smirking at having conned a very distressed young tourist. And they smugly lied to us that supermarkets don’t stock the same whiskies as their shop. I found the exact same bottle at my local Waitrose this morning at £35. Disgusting, avoid!
