About
The House of Dun is more than just a historic house, the Dun Estate boasts some wonderful walks, lively nature and fantastic views over the Montrose Basin. The Estate has amassed some fascinating features from over the years including an icehouse, the family mausoleum, the ruins of Dun Castle, a Neolithic monument and two walled gardens. During a tour of the house you will find out what life was like for the people living there, both above and below the stairs. One of the keynote features of the property is the astounding plasterwork in the salon. The plasterwork is a real statement by the family, and is teaming with detail and symbolism. With most of the collection on display being original to the house, you can be guaranteed an authentic view of how the people of the house lived. The property also has an excellent cafe and a separate gift shop. The cafe serves cakes and meals that will be suitable for almost anyone’s dietary needs.

    Interesting, informative, engaging
The House of Dun is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland. The house itself is full of interest, not only for the handsome building itself, its furnishings, its paintings its fittings etc but because of its history and its place within Scottish high society. The 1-hour tour of the house is well worth going on. Our guide was immensely well informed and also highly entertaining. The grounds are lovely too, and the outhouses provide an informative illustrated history of the changing fortunes of the county of Angus and its people over the past 200 years or more. The accompanying explanatory text is of a high order. The tea room has on its walls an intriguing display of farm instruments, each designed for a particular purpose. Easy walking in the grounds, and the house nicely compact with artefacts well displayed, and a fascinating collection of portraits on the walls. Well worth assigning a couple of hours to and, on a fine day, a bit longer with the gardens and walks so appealing too.

    I’d like the job please!
Visited today, beautiful spring day with a gorgeous show of daffodils around the house. Our tour guide was ‘Mr Young’ who was thoroughly informative and entertaining. Not a huge house (much bigger than mine though) so the tour through the rooms is around an hour. Then we bade our ‘lang toun lad’ farewell and went off to enjoy a walk round the gardens. Just a lovely day out from St Andrews for us.

    Entertaining tour
So glad that we decided to drive up to Montrose and visit The House of Dun. We booked an hours tour and were met by Colin who played the role of Mr Young the Handyman/ Gardener. He was quite brilliant at playing the part. He was extremely well informed and articulate and told the story snd history of the house in an informal and entertaining way. He certainly made the tour a most entertaining experience. I would highly recommend a visit to this house as the furnishings and artefacts are extremely well maintained as are the many outbuildings, walled garden and grounds, cafe and amenities. Well worth a visit.

    Fascinating historic gem
I really enjoyed this tour. In the vein of living anthropology, the tour was given by Mr. Young playing the role of a hiring manager of the estate in its heyday. He was great and very knowledgeable and answered my incessant questions. Not only that but he pointed me toward some classic literature that is going on my to be read list asap.

    House of fun!
Had the most wonderful day at this beautiful house. The house itself is amazing- murder, Jacobites and royalty! But the true highlight was the wonderful staff- amazing tour guide who gave us the best information and was a lovely chap and the loveliest woman at the front desk, really made us feel welcome and have a genuinely lovely day. Would highly recommend!

    Fabulous place
Brilliant place- woodland walks are great with the dog and the house tour was the best (without the dog). Excellent place to visit and if weather was good you could spend hours there. Great space for picnics and families.

    Lovely afternoon out
Myself and my mum visited the House of Dun for the very first time today and I'm so glad we did. Even though it was a very foggy day, the grounds were beautiful. We were very unexpectedly offered a complimentary tour around the house as we were the only people visiting at the time so we had the wonderful Mr Young who took us around the house. He was very informative, very dedicated and very funny! He put in a lot of effort even though he was only showing the two of us around. The staff we came across were very friendly and there was so much to see. We will definitely be back in the future! Thanks again!

    Fabulous tour guide!
I thoroughly enjoyed my guided tour at House of Dun led by “Mr Young” aka Colin. I learned such fascinating information about the family and Scotland in general. The plaster work in the house is outstanding but my favourite part of the tour was seeing all the beautiful embroidered pieces. I definitely will recommend this historic house to others.

    Well worth a visit
Had a fascinating and very informative tour of the house guided by the extremely knowledgeable and entertaining “Mr Young”. The house is not large but has beautiful plaster ceilings and incredible embroidery work. The tour lasted an hour and was packed with fascinating stories and anecdotes. Explored the gardens and sign posted walks through the grounds. An afternoon well spent and highly recommended.

Without exception, all of the staff were not only polite and helpful but we're obviously enthused themselves by venue.
A wonderful house set in magnificent grounds with lovely gardens. I don't think I have ever seen a straighter border than at the entrance. The house was located deliberately to facilitate the extraordinary view to the Montrose basin.

Excellent place to visit. Our guide Carole, in costume as the Governess of the Erskine family, was our fantastic guide and brought the whole place " alive". So much to see and experience. We have been NT members for many years but this building with its many fascinating and priceless contents has been the highlight so far. Highly recommended.

Excellent tour yesterday with Michelle who was dressed in period costume. Very knowledgeable and easily listened to. The tour took about an hour and the history of the house and the old occupants was well received.A good experience.

We went for a visit on a slightly chilly and foggy Saturday but despite the weather we had a great time. The tour is very engaging and my grandma loved it, we also visited the cafe and I had a look at the walled garden.
The only downside would be accessibility, my grandma could only access the basement level and struggled with the gravel in the courtyard, however we were told of this in advance and understood it is of course a historic house not built with accessibility in mind!

This is a beautiful house to go and see. The building is beautiful and its contents are incredible, especially all the embroidery. We were taken on a tour by “Lady Violet” who was very informative. Although large, the house is not ostentatious and has a lovely feel to it.
Highly recommend a visit. I would love to return in summer when the gardens are in bloom.

This is a beautiful gracious house from another era, still richly furnished and with the family's paintings from through the decades - all beautifully maintained. The grounds are lovely to wander through, and it's worth popping into the stables that house the Angus Folk Museum. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We had an excellent lunch in the cafe afterwards. Altogether a wonderful place to visit - don't miss this house!
