Amazing little museum!
Jul 2021
This is a fantastic little museum and it’s free! Amazing and interesting history around the bell rock lighthouse. We came across it accidentally however, we were really impressed with the information on offer and the friendliness of the staff member who greeted us. You can just make out the lighthouse on a clear day, which is fair enough considering it’s 11 miles out to sea. All covid measures are being strictly adhered to which makes you feel safe. Would return.

What an interesting place to visit. Learn all about the only lighthouse built in the sea and is still standing after all that time. Plus it almost totally maintenance free.

Well I never !
Nov 2019
The only thing I knew about Abroath was that I love Smokies - and visiting thier home we just decided to pop in here ( to avoid the rain to be honest). Welcomed by a friendly enthousiastic volunteer who pointed out the Bell Rock on the horizon - had not even heard of it before....why ? Absolutely loved our trip to this museum, we stayed well over an hour. The film was a fantastic introduction, and the exhibits brought the whole history to life. Have even done a little further research on Rock Lighouses since we returned home - its an utterly fascinating aspect of history I had never previously considered.
Added to that the Museum building is a Georgian gem and has an interesting history of its own. Its free - unbelievable !

Interesting little museum
Nov 2019
We enjoyed this little museum, especially its gripping video about the lighthouse built on the rock. There's lots to see and ponder on, and we'll be taking our grandchildren to see it again at the first opportunity.
Nice location, too.

Yes this was really worth a visit and entry was free.Interesting stories of the Bell Rock and because it was a clear day we could actually see the light house which was 11 miles out at sea.The lovely girl in the museum gave us great information about the history of the signal tower ,all very interesting.

Seeing The Light
Sep 2019
Smashing little museum, revamped thoroughly in recent years, housed in an historical building. It tells the stories of Arbroath’s fishing industry, harbour and the awesome Bell Rock lighthouse. Plenty of good reading, artefacts, models and images bring to life the three subjects extremely well. Of particular interest are the difficulties faced in constructing a lighthouse on a mostly submerged reef 12 miles southeast of Arbroath. The unusual lives of the lighthouse keepers (dispensed with in 1988 come the advent of automation) is fascinating. I hope plans to open the signal tower, a fine vantage point, reach fruition. Afterwards, be sure to explore Arbroath’s nearby harbour, home to a colourful selection of working and leisure boats.
