Many memories come flooding back to my childhood when I see pictures of this fountain. The inscription " Whosoever drinks of these waters shall thirst again" presented a challenge to my young mind, which in resulted in me drinking as many cups of water from the fountain (It had a metal cup attached to a chain, back then) to prove the words wrong! However some 30 years later when returning to Belfast after migrating to Australia, I revisited this fountain and walked around it and to my surprise written on the backside were the following words " but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst" Happily I had come to understand what both written words actually meant!

This is a great location and little is seen or advertised about it. I wish there was a better write up about this location for visitors. We only found going to Nandos.

We stumbled upon this wonderful fountain while taking a stroll through downtown, The detail and craftsmanship were incredible. It was lovely to see everything on the fountain and made me do wee bit of research.
I think the bus tours should put this on the route just a drive by point of interest.

I came upon this by accident because I was walking along the streets of Belfast, and on my way to their City Hall. From afar, I could see this tall structure, sticking out in the middle of an intersection.

When I was near enough to read the inscription, I found out that it was a memorial fountain, but so far, all the fountains I have came across in my desultory walks in the city, did not really have any water running out of it into any basin. However, this did not really seem to be well taken care of, or considered as a tourist attraction, enough for its upkeep/maintenance and enough so that people give it more attention as they pass by. It looked somewhat forlorn, but that was probably because it was a cold, dreary day with nobody else around as I passed by.

This is a beautiful fountain/water feature. It is kind of hidden. Not the first thing I would recommend my friends to look at, but it is on that list.

This is a beautiful fountain/water feature but unfortunately has been neglected. Come on city council and bring it back to its former glory!!

It's easy to miss this 'attraction' on the way to the big movie theater around the corner or to one of the many restaurants located in the area. The Victorian fountain has a symbolic message that you can drink here and keep both healthy and clean - something which unfortunately is difficult today because it does not seem to work (temporarily?) ... It reminds me of a sawed-off church steeples and feels like a odd bird among the surrounding houses, not least the BBC's local headquarters.

The inscription on the fountain reads, "Whosoever drinketh the water that I shall give him...shall never thirst again". Sadly there is no water to drink.

I am the person who made a mistake and said that this fountain was only about thirty years old. As I really like this fountain I photograph it once every year but I had forgotten about my 2013 review and the fact that I had misread the date. As other reviewers have pointed out this beautiful red gothic styled memorial fountain dates from 1885. Unfortunately I was unable to edit my original review so I am taking this opportunity to write a second review.

I must admit that I am appalled by the condition of this fountain and I cannot understand why what should be a major tourist attraction is not being maintained by Belfast City Council. If you live in Belfast write and complain to the City Council. If they could find £300,000 to erect ’Nuala With The Hula’ surely they can find a few thousand to clean and maintain this wonderful landmark structure.

Thomas Thompson, a naval surgeon distinguished in the Napoleonic Wars, was appalled by the conditions in Belfast during the Great Famine. Even though the failure of the potato crop did not directly affect city inhabitants, hoards of refugees from the countryside brought with them devastating epidemics of typhus, cholera, smallpox, and dysentery. Thomas Thompson was the founder of the Charitable Home for the Incurable which provided comfort for the sick.

Often in town and see this monument. Never really paid it attention til today. It's a well sculpted statue and acts as a great landmark.

When I saw this fountain, I thought it was very old, but then I found that he has only about 30 years. An special arhitecture, sorrounded by modern buildings.
