No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

We didn't actually mean to walk along them but found that it was the quickest way back. It was amazing to think of what it would of been like while you're stood up there, higher than the houses. Be careful though as there's no railing...More

If you are reasonably fit, this is a must see,so much history here and its a good way to start seeing the city centre from a height walking along the old city walls.

Walked along these impressive city walls, which sit upon foundations laid by the Romans. The walls provide a good way to get around the city, while providing a great view at the same time.

Definitely worth downloading one of the wall descriptions before you go so you can appreciate it properly. It was a rainy day so needed to take extra precautions. Loved it.

Had a very pleasant Sunday walk first thing in the morning. Beware this isn't open if the weather is bad or icey etc as we tried the day before.

This is a lovely relaxing walk and also makes a great bar pub crawl. Lovely when the sun is shining just a shame that dogs are not allowed on the walls.

Some good views, interesting walk. Do it, you probably would benefit more from walking round the city than eating cake in it!

They can be accessed most times of the day, during daylight hours. However, the gates through which the walls pass are locked and so preventing access. The walls are not continuous and in parts are open on one side so not... More

We never got the feeling like we could fall. There are high walls or fences and solid footing. If it's just being high, I think 20-30 feet at the most is it.

I am a tourist, and so cannot answer your question but York is a highly organised destination and so would be suprised if a German speaking tour was not available
