William II laid the foundation to this abbey during the 11th century, which became known as the most powerful and wealthiest monastery in the North of England at that time.

I spent a couple of hours here with a picnic lunch, reading – it was peaceful and very nice to sit amongst stunning historical architecture. Seeing the squirrels was a bit of a novelty for me, too!

It's free unlike most of York for tourists. Good park by the art gallery with Abbey ruins and a groundplan to help you imagine it in its former state

When I saw this abbey it took my breath away I had no idea it was there, I had only been into York centre before, grounds were amazing

Evocative ruins situated in lovely gardens. There was some information up which was great because it is nice to know what you are looking at. Great to have something free in York which is a fabulous city but expensive.

Glorious views of autumn trees and the lovely park. Peaceful place to walk or just sit and enjoy, even in the tourist season.

It's very easy to imagine how grand the Abbey must have been in its hay day. The setting is wonderful and on a sunny day, I'm sure there's no nice place to sit and enjoy a picnic. There's no charge to walk around the abbey...More

Definitely worth a visit whilst in York. The gardens are well kept and the Abbey quite quiet and well kept. Some more information plaques would have helped whilst we walked around but it did not detract from our visit.

Spotted the Abbey whilst walking into town. Set in lovely gardens it is free to walk around and not at all fenced off. It makes you wonder where the rest of the stone went?

Visited back on a sunny day in the summer and it was such as lovely place to walk around, along with the gardens. It is hard to believe that is is over 900 years old, shows how well things were built in the old days

Stare at the ground, follow the left over wall structure, the size and grandeur will fill your mind.
