FREE FUN IN YORK... aka The Fabulous York Cat Trail provides both visitors and locals with the opportunity to find and photo the numerous statues of cats which are on York's old buildings. These were put there to frighten away rats and mice. The statues were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and to bestow good luck and good health on people. Enjoy the trail... it's FREE! You are warmly invited to download it from our website, or to pick it up from our Shambles based shop

We all loved this cat trail hunt. Some were tricky to find, which made it even more fun and challenging! It gave us also another perspective of York and having to take the time to see the quirky old houses. Great fun even if you...More

We found a guidebook where we were staying about the Cat trail which had the history and info about all the different cars - but there are free leaflets in lots of the tourist places - it’s a fun way to see the city centre...More

Even if you're not that interested in cats, do follow the cat trail. It takes you all over the city and you get to see places that you might otherwise miss. It's a bit of fun and a distraction for kids who don't want to...More

Did part of the cat trail. What a quirky way to see York. Looking up the walls, window ledges and rooftops. Great fun.

Recommended this by our taxi driver and we found the map for the free trail, at the York Glass Shop in the Shambles. To locate the cat figures involves looking above street level and it is then, that you see another side to the history of...More

We found a leaflet for the York Cat Trail in our apartment, so decided to see if we could find them all. It took a few hours to complete, which was quite fun! The leaflet we had with directions was sometimes a little vague, and...More

We really enjoyed following this trail as it shows you a lot of the sights in central York as well. Picked up the map from the tourist centre near the Minster. Spotting the cats sometimes a bit tricky. Good fun!

We downloaded and printed the map at home. We didn't follow it exactly, but the kids enjoyed looking for some of the cats. Good to keep the kids entertained and not moan while walking around and seeing York!

We read about the cat trail while researching activities in York: statues of cats on buildings. Two maps are available, that are not identical. We used them both to make sure we were missing none. The maps are laid out like a treasure hunt with...More

I think it largely depends on the number and ages of the children you're with, and how busy York is. You can easily just do some of the clues, we spent a good 30 minutes following the trail, did some shopping and found... More
