What an amazing attraction! Apart from being a wonder of construction, this rail line passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. It doesn't matter what time of year, the countryside is, indeed, a magnificent spectacle. Small towns, villages, moorland and finally...More

On our bucket list. We went on a normal service so no steam nostalgia but it is available on selected days. Charming little stations, glorious scenery. NB the famous Ribbleshead viaduct is best seen from the road! A walk round Carlisle is pleasant enough until...More

From other reviews I knew we would probably not get the best view of the Ribblehead Viaduct but this journey is simply stunning for scenery. The village stations are so beautifully kept. What a wonderful part of England to see.

If you have a day return ticket, you can hop off and back on to another train (but you must continue your journey in the same direction) Please check the timetable though as there is a long wait betwen some services

Go to the uk steam website for information on all steam trains and their operators. These are all charter trains and you have to book with the relevant operator. The normal main line service operates daily.
