The Settle-Carlisle Railway is one of the world's great rail journeys. It carves its way through the magnificent landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and then descends to Cumbria's lush green Eden Valley with its views of the Pennines and Lakeland Fells. A seven day a week service of diesel sprinter units gives travellers plenty of choice of when to travel, and the opportunity to board and leave the train at many of the beautifully preserved stations along the route. Customers can also expect a refreshment trolley service on many of the trains.

Always wanted to go on the Settle to Carlisle railway and finally managed to do it on 16th May 2018. Lovely journey through fantastic scenery. Was a bit disappointed not to be steam hauled but of course that is only on special occasions.

Shame it was not a steam train but an enjoyable trip I have been waiting for years to go over that viaduct.

we did the premier dining which was pricey £210 each, but very nice, lovely food which included breakfast on the outward journey served just after 8.30 and dinner on the return served at just after 5pm. For the price it would have been nice to...More

We took our dog on the Settle to Garsdale section and it was wonderful. Lovely views, not too expensive and very friendly train conductor. You can just about see the viaduct as the train turns and Garsdale station has the statue of Ruswarp the dog...More

We booked the Settle to Appleby trip as part of a 60th birthday celebration. We also had a volunteer guide called Richard who was very informative. Definitely do it again, hopefully the steam train next time. Appleby was lovely too

Heading back from Glasgow (the day the snow started!) I caught the Settle Carlisle line rather than my usual route via Edinburgh. Boy, I was so glad I did! Having not been on this line before I wasn’t aware of the magnificent scenery. The train...More

It sounds as though you had a memorable journey. Will your next trip be in spring, summer or autumn? Each season offers different views along the route

For the train buff this offers lots of interest with the highest mainline station in England, 3 magnificent viaducts including Ribblehead and the summit of the line at Ais Gill. For others there is truly stupendous scenery. Travel on a scheduled service or on an...More

Go to the uk steam website for information on all steam trains and their operators. These are all charter trains and you have to book with the relevant operator. The normal main line service operates daily.

Steam trains operate as special excursions rather than for everyday travel. Check out the settle-carlisle website for lots of information about travel from Skipton to Carlisle
