St.Mary’s Battersea Church stands on the banks of the River Thames. Every time I pass it there seems to be some repairs going on. Nice.

Basically rebuilt in 1777, St Mary's Church is the parish church of Battersea. It is a bit out of the way (we got the bus that goes from Victoria station to the street outside). Some wall monuments from the previous building have been repositioned in this one. There is a "Guide Book to Battersea Parish Church" available that is very useful to explain the history of the place and its furnishings, including the recently added (1976-1982) stained glass windows.

The crypt was a popular burial place until 1854, by which time there were 300 lead coffins. These were moved to the sides of the crypt and covered in concrete in 1875. The space has been remodelled with an office, a kitchen and a meeting room, and is used as a nursery during the week, so it cannot be accessed on weekdays.

The building is open most days (I phoned to ensure that it was on the day we planned to visit) and the lady in the office with the oriel window at the front was very helpful. It is well maintained, bright and airy, with a surprising amount of history. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
