Overview
More
William Wordsworth is Britain's best-loved poet. His life was a series of adventures and his early experiences made him into a rebel. Orphaned as a child, he went to University, travelled across Europe during the French Revolution, fell in love with an older French woman and then returned to turn English literature on its head with his radical ideas and poems in language that anyone could understand. He moved to Dove Cottage in 1799 and stayed for nine years, writing some of the most famous poetry in the English language, inspired by the landscape and the people he met. Visitors can take guided tours of Dove Cottage, wander in the gardens he designed and planted with his sister and discover his incredible life story in the museum next door (included in admission). Special exhibitions change regularly and family activities are integrated into the experience, with family friendly events during the school holidays.

Prior to the guided tour of the cottage, we browsed the book store and discovered an array of books and curios designed to appeal to a broad range of visitors. So, yes; The Wordsworth Foundation is a “cottage industry” operating to profit from William Wordsworth’s...More

William Wordsworth lived in Dove Cottage for almost 10 years, during the period when he did his most writing. The cottage is furnished to reflect that time period and contains many of his original possessions and furnishings.

A good guided tour around the house by a knowledgeable guide who knew her Wordsworth history well, together with a visit to the museum which is well laid out with the chronology of Wordsworth's life and his interaction with the other Lakeland poets. A pity...More

This was a great little stop for the literary nerds we are. The price for the tour and museum access is only 8 pounds each, which is a great price for the amount of information you get. We also loved the garden around the cottage.

Hi Jo, As others have indicated, we don't allow dogs in the Cottage or Museum, but they are welcome in the cafe and there are lots of dog friendly walks around.
