On a bright, sunny morning we ventured to Brantwood, the fascinating home of John Ruskin, famous writer, artist and social reformer 1872-1900. Standing in a 250 acre estate on the edge of Lake Coniston it was a remarkable location with far reaching views. The house...More

House ok, but not many rooms to look at. Cafe an absolute rip off. £12.30 for tea and 2 pieces of chocolate brownie and very slow service. Yet more examples of tourists being ripped off in the lakes.

Parked in car park, trouble with scooter on steep slope, a wheelchair was provided to enable me to see most of the ground floor, fabulous views from the house.

I learned a lot about John Ruskin that day. Loved the turret off his bedroom which afforded a 180 degree view of the lake - so peaceful. Next time we'll tour the gardens but we had to catch the steam yacht Gondola back to Coniston....More

This restaurant at Brantwood has been extended since our last visit. Has lost a bit of the old charm but they have more tables and seating. Quite expensive, 2 pots of tea, 2 scones and 1 portion of jam (no cream or butter). £12.30 ouch!!...More
