We'd just been to a wedding and wanted to fill the Sunday afternoon with a not too taxing hike to brush off any hangovers. This hike proved to be perfect. Free parking at the bottom, always a nice surprise in the lakes! And a 1-2hr...More
Group of 7 of us (ranging from 8 to 52 years of age) spent the day walking up to and then down the Old Man. Terrific weather for an autumn day gave us wonderful views. It can be hard on the legs of the out-of-practice...More
Definitely start your hike by parking at the end of Walna Scar Road at the end of Station Road in Coniston. This car park is pretty rough if you have park higher up so it might help if passengers could get out of your car...More
It took us 3 hours to climb via the quarry route but well worth it when we got to the top. Quite amusing that kids whizz passed you, whilst we were huffing and puffing. Be prepared for a steep climb. The views at the top...More

If you're reasonably fit and you have someone else to carry the rest of your gear and plenty of drinks. Pick a dry day as the slate up there can get quite slippery when wet. I know what it's like carrying the weight of a toddler on your back so to help your balance I'd suggest at least one walking pole for ascending and descending the steeper sections near the summit. Take care, take your time and take lots of photos. Enjoy.
