A tiny first floor church adjacent to the cathedral's South gate. The church is accessed via a steep wooden staircase, so may be a problem for thise with mobility difficulties, but well worth the effort if you can manage it.

We came across this charming church whilst on our way to Winchester College with a tour guide who pointed it out, so we went back later to have a look and were utterly charmed. The church is (as it says) built on the top of...More

This gem of a church is worth seeking out, both for its historical significance and also its quiet setting just outside the main hustle of the city centre. It is just outside the walls, near the Wykeham Arms pub (also more than worth a visit).

St. Swithun's, which is next to the cathedral but difficult to find without directions, is a simple Anglican church located up a flight a stairs from some shops. St. Swithun's is the perfect antidote after the grandeur of the cathedral.

Gem of a church that was built into the city gate over 800 years ago. Small in size but with some wonderful features. Have to climb some stairs to get there. Located by the Wykeham Arms pub.

We chanced upon St Swithun's almost by accident, just wandering about. Couldn't resist having a look, up the stairs to this lovely little 13th century church, built into the city walls. It is bright and airy (not what you expect from buildings of that time),...More

I have walked past this amazing piece of local history so many times without visiting and wished I had gone in before. This has been a place of worship in Winchester for over 800 years and has the feel of humble but huge historical significance....More

Climb the stairs to this little gem and you'll find a glorious ceiling, an airy and bright space that is peaceful and historically significant.

As old and peaceful as it is, this is a living church. Beautiful restoration - light and airy. Especially pleasant place to sit quietly
