Long gone and replaced by a shop selling interior housewares, lamp shades and nick knacks. Harlequins had been a popular used and remaindered book shop which is missed in the town.

Came in again today to buy an armful of quality and readable remaindered books, only to witness the discussion between the server and an elderly and acute blue stocking lady in her late eighties who managed to get a clear indication that unless there is an unexpected and considerable upturn in trade, the shop is quite likely to close sometime soon after Christmas this year. The reason is that despite a core of loyal and local customers, a lot of trade is bypassing Totnes. I like this shop. I very much hope something will happen to change minds and increase trade.

Half price on all children's books and other offers make this often cheaper than downloading books on you Kindle.
Just remember to go the cashpoint first as they don't take plastic.

Interesting selection of remaindered books but stuck in memory of our children because they discovered that this was the only shop in the county with peace poppies available this year.

Not, perhaps as good as it used to be. Long narrow shop with mostly remaindered stock. Prices about right maybe a bit higher than most similar shops in cities. Have found the guy behind the counter a strong opinioned school teachery type. I don't mind help and information but to be told what I am to think of a book can be slightly off.

Esssentially a remaindered bookshop with a modest second hand collection for sale. I have been coming here over two decades on several visits to Devon each year. This smallish shop is in the bit under the overhang and behind some pillars on the pavement roughly opposite the market square in the top third of the main street hill. I used to like to look at the tables of reduced art books, and the wide selection of children's and local stuff. The other interesting feature was the late middle aged man behind the where you pay table who I always took to be the owner. Apparently omniscient about books or the book trade, he also seemed to be a vital cog in the town dynamic and almost every time we came in he would be talking earnestly about some local event or campaign and despite being committed and active always seemed unhappy with some recent turn of events. My young nephews always found him a bit stern and regarded it as a bit a challenge/dare, when given their book allowance to either complete the purchase without exchanging a word or more recently to ask some trigger question about Costa or the Totnes Pound problems.

I am not sure that this is a particularly cheap remaindered book shop or that it has very much that isn't available in hundreds of places but I like the local bias and the opportunity to pick up an occasional non Taschen art book. Recently it feels as though some of the central tables have gone and the stock may be reducing. Also the Victor Meldrew character has not been there. Maybe he has retired? I hope he is well.
