About
Kents Cavern is Britain's Oldest known prehistoric home. You are led by a guide through a labyrinth of undergound natural passages used by humankind for thousands of years. Neanderthals and the very first Britons occupied the caves. Here Victorian explorers combined geological time and fossil remains to reveal the antiquity of humanity. Open daily for guided tours. See natural caverns, amazing formations, remains of mammoth, woolly rhino, sabre-toothed cats. There is an Ice Age woodland trail quest, shop and restaurant with views over the Ilsham Valley. Located in Torquay, birth place of Agatha Christie, the caves are part of the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, 1.5kms from Torquay Harbour, close to the South West Coast Path. The caves inspired writers like Agatha Christie, Beatrix Potter and more recently folk-horror writer Adam Nevill. Perfect on any day all ,year. Onine pre-booking highly recommended to visit these popular Devon caves.

    Great tour by Amber
Went today because of wet weather. You need to book tickets online I tried to get a 3pm slot but by the time I’d entered my details there weren’t enough places left, so had to go at 4. Very interesting caves, Amber was great and gave us lots of facts. Great place to visit on a rainy day

    Worth the visit
As soon as we arrived the staff were very helpful, directing us to a small exhibition that we could look around while waiting for our entrance time. We had the tour guide Simon, who was very informative and we could see he was passionate about what he was saying. The caves are beautiful and I felt that I had learnt a lot. Very relaxed tour, you don’t feel rushed and can take time to take photos, Simon waited until everyone was ready before he spoke making sure No-one missed out. Afterwards we asked about the woodland trail and if it was suitable for adults or more for children. It is more for children but we had a walk around and if it was nicer weather it would have been better but still worth seeing everything while you are there.

    Kents Cavern Tour
First time visiting Kent’s Cavern all the staff were very friendly. Lucas our guide was very knowledgeable and funny at times but also very approachable if we had any questions. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Would definitely recommend a visit.

    Great staff, interesting history
We attended the second to last tour on a Sunday so our tour was a very small group. Our guide Joe very clearly loves what he does and the history behind the caves, and made the tour very interesting. The tour is definitely worth it and so is the café at the end.

    A trip back in time.
Myself, my daughter and grandsons aged 14 and 11 visited this excellent attraction. Having booked online at a reduced price, we all thoroughly enjoyed our 45 minute tour. Our excellent guide Charlotte gave an interesting and informative tour, utilising a torch to point out various structures. At one point she extinguished the light completely which enabled us to experience a completely pitch black environment - quite surreal. Coffee and yummy chocolate cake in the cafe afterwards, topped off a brilliant morning. FYI this experience is definitely not suitable for very small children.

    Great Tour
Great guided tour of Kent’s Cavern. Our tour guide Quinn was informative and friendly and happy to answer any questions - I hope he receives some recognition for his hard work! Really interesting with photo opportunities throughout the caves. There is a gift shop, parking and cafe on site as well.
Thank you for your positive review! We will pass your comments onto Quinn

An amazing insight in to our earliest history.
We had a wonderful experience last week. I went around ten years ago and really enjoyed the experience then too so thought I would take my Son. He hadn't been too keen on visiting but absolutely loved it. You are guided around as part of a group. Charlotte P was our guide and she was a wealth of knowledge and very funny. The caves are amazing and such a wonderful opportunity to learn about our earliest history. There is also an outdoor trail which is particularly aimed at children but adds to the experience. The car park is £3 for 3 hours and was very busy. You can park on the road for free but this was also very busy with it being the summer holiday and a wet day, hence people wanting to be indoors. All staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit again and highly recommend that you do too.
Thank you for your positive review! We look forward to seeing you again soon

    A lovely visit
Loved this place! We took a tour with Cara last week and she was so informative. My daughter (7) was kept interested and wasn't too scared in the caves. She loved the woodland trail and the chocolate cake from the cafe was the best we've ever tasted. She found treasure and was able to keep the stones she found.

Amazing tour with Helen learning about the history and importance of the site. Stunning beautiful and haunting inside so be sure to take a good camera. Great on-site facilities and pay and display parking but definitely worth the price of admission and would recommend

    Worth visiting
Very interesting and important sight, our guide was very good at engaging the children on the tour and able to answer questions requiring understanding of resent scientific developments. Overall very impressed and would recommend especially if you have an interest in sights such as this. Parking was easy and there is a cafe on sight that was better than the average for this kind of sight.

The caverns tour was interesting however, with a few youngsters in the tour group, it did sound a little patronising for the adults at times. The guide was a little bit regimented getting us from point to point and it would have been nice to explore the caverns independently perhaps after the tour was completed. For the entrance fee it didn't really feel like enough time was spent in the caverns.

For booking online we got a tour and cream tea offer for £15.50 each which did save us a few quid on buying separately. The cream tea comprised of a bountiful two scones each, sweet or savoury, with jam and clotted cream and pot of tea. A saving grace really as this did make up for any minor disappointments of the caverns tour.

Overall, an enjoyable couple of hours with a tasty cream tea.

Thank you for visiting. We're so glad you enjoyed your cream tea, we will pass your comments on to our Firestone Kitchen team. Sorry to hear the cave tour didn't quite match up to your food experience. Unfortunately as we have the highest level of protection in the UK for the caves we are unable to allow people to wonder around on their. This is a requirement by law for conservation and safety reasons. The guided tour takes around 45-1 hour to complete which we believe is the right period of time for people to be underground. Come and visit us again soon.

We had a 50 minute tour of the cavern with David, our very knowledgeable and humorous guide. The development and incredibly slow evolution of the caves puts our brief time on this planet into perspective. Physically, it wasn't too difficult to negotiate the narrow and darker sections of the tour as underfoot is a smooth surface, but there's no seating throughout.
There's a cafe with a nice terrace outside and, of course, the obligatory gift shop. By today's standards I felt the cavern visit was priced appropriately for the entertainment given and time taken. Recommended.

A trip arranged as part of a 4 day stay in very sunny Torquay.
Reasonably priced with the add on Devon cream tea - reduced as part of the 'eat out to help out' deal.
Due to restrictions times entrance with reduced size group.
Very informative with good guide interaction.
The cafe and other public areas are very clean, with staff spraying and wiping down surfaces throughout. Shame visitors - about 40% - were ignoring mask wearing signs.
All in all a nice trip to escape the heat.

Many thanks for taking time to share your thoughts on the visit. Your support is very much appreciated. Day by day, many visitors are wearing face-coverings, as they get used to the new normal. It is, as you rightly allude to, a requirement to do so when visiting the caves. Thanks and we look forward to welcoming you here again soon. Nick

We had a fantastic time at Kent’s Cavern. Our tour guide, David was interesting, funny and very knowledgeable- he interacted well with children and adults alike and safely followed all procedures relating to COVID 19. We felt very well looked after throughout our journey and even enjoyed a cream tea with 50% off for the “eat out to help out scheme” in the cafe afterwards. I would definitely recommend this place, although be sure to book in advance particularly if it’s a rainy day as tickets can sell out quickly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the caves and were fortunate enough to be shown around them by a fantastic Tour guide Quinn who was incredibly knowledgable and enthusiastic. We were really impressed that he was able to make the tour as interesting for our 10 year old, 15 year olds as well as the adults in our group. We had been meaning to visit for a while as we live locally and we were very pleased we did. The procedures in place for dealing with Covid were impressive which is especially important for an indoor venue. We are already looking forward to our next visit :)

A really interesting tour around the caves led by Roxanne, who’s enthusiasm and delivery was undimmed by the noisy mob bringing up the rear of the tour that we were on. Lots of facts about the rock formations, a bit of history and bones and skulls - what’s not to like?
We arrived at the suggested 15 minutes before the time of the tour, this allowed for parking ( £3 for 4 hours ), checking in and purchasing a souvenir booklet ( informative and full of lovely photos ) and time for a cup of coffee ( v. good ).
Then after a tannoy announcement, through the magic door and into the caves. The tour took about 1 hour and the paths are generally on the level with only a few steps to negotiate, so most people should be able to walk around easily..

A fantastic half day experience within easy reach of Torquay (#22 bus from Torquay gets you closest). The caverns themselves are really cool to see and he guides are super knowledgeable. Ours was Quinn and he was funny, informative and passionate about the caves and their history. The café is great and I recommend ordering the cream tea. Lunch is also good - I had a delicious Cornish pasty. There is also a short exhibition about the caves and a little outdoor woodland trail. The gift shop will appeal to children more than adults and the woolly mammoth Plusch is great. The cave tours are limited in size (a good thing) so definitely worth pre-booking. During this post-pandemic phase the attraction encourages masks and good hygiene and this is a definite plus, making it feel safe and enjoyable above and below ground. All in all, a great mini excursion and good value for money.

Whilst maybe not acceptable for very small children I would say 6+ you really get to travel back through the ages, hearing the history of the caverns in Torquay how they were made and how they were explored. The caverns themselves are a great view but alto the Tour guide really understood the assignment. Not only a tour but a performance that engaged with all ages, and interaction with the explorers on the tour, Credit James for that. The tour lasts for about an hour, advised to pre book as places go fast but worth a visit whilst in Babbacombe

My daughter was keen to visit so we booked on-line for the tour. The web site was easy to use and showed how many spaces were left at each time.

On arrival there were parking spaces available and the fee was a reasonable £2. The machine only takes coins so we had to scratch about for change as used to paying for everything by card nowadays.

Our tour started bang on time and was full but there was space for everyone to view the caves. The tour guide - Laurence - was very knowledgeable and pitched the level of information just right to engage the different age groups on the tour. I certainly learnt quite a few things of interest that will spur me to investigate them further.

We finished our tour with lunch in the cafe which was reasonably priced and of good quality.

Thanks for your comprehensive review. Your support is greatly appreciated. I will pass on your comments to Laurence. Thank you. We thoroughly enjoyed our Kent’s Cavern experience today . All Staff were friendly and helpful. Our Guide was Cara who was brilliant , very informative , explaining everything , but in a fun way , we were a group of six adults so she pitched her talk accordingly. She ensured everyone was distanced and was constantly cleaning all the handrails etc , ( there were plenty of hand sanitisers in the reception area ) .
We were given a free mince pie and juice ,which were included in the ticket price in the Cafe afterwards which was a nice touch. 👍
