Dating from 14th century, these medieval passages under Exeter High Street are a unique ancient monument: no similar system of passages can be explored by the public elsewhere in Britain. The Passages have long exercised a fascination over local people, with stories of wars and sieges, plague and pestilence! Their purpose was simple: to bring clean drinking water from natural springs in fields lying outside the walled city, through lead pipes into the heart of the city. The pipes sometimes sprang leaks and repairs to buried pipes could only be carried out by digging them up as we do today. To avoid this disruption the passages were vaulted and it is down some of these vaulted passageways that visitors are guided. The Passages are dark and narrow with a fascinating history. Visitors can experience interactive and educational exhibits in the Underground Passages Heritage Centre and watch a short video presentation before their guided tour.

After 25 years finally, finally managed to explore this medieval gem under Exeter. Highly recommend it, but not for the claustrophobic or those with mobility problems.

Not what you expect to find under the streets of Exeter but very interesting nonetheless. Took my mum 70 who turned out to be both claustrophobic and rat phobic. There are currently NO rats but historically there were many and although it does get a...More

Really interesting tour by an extremely knowledgeable guide. The tunnels are tight at times but this all adds to the charm. A very informative film is shown before the tour begins which explains the history of the construction.

Fascinating opportunity to understand how they got water from the springs into the churches - then spread to other parts of the city. Up close and personal view of stone work; the impact of the Black Plague and more. The spies are tight - you...More

The tour guide wasn’t the greatest,. I was at the back of the group, and he would just stop and start talking so by the time I got within listening distance I’d missed a lot of what he said. Although at 6 quid it was...More

This is a very informative tour with a knowledgeable guide. The crawl through part of the tunnel was a bit hard on the knees shorts not the best clothes to wear. We had a great time.

Well worth a visit! If choosing to crawl through a particular length of passage, good idea to bring and wear some waterproof trousers or similar.

A good experience to learn about the history of Exeter. They have some very good interactive displays if you want to go down the very narrow tunnel then advise some old jeans as could get a bit dirty going through on your hands and knees...More

The Underground Passages are pretty unique and certainly worth a visit, as long as you know what to expect. Unlike the likes of Mary King close in Edinburgh, the passages here do not represent multiple facets of the city's history, and are solely to do...More

There are different prices based on whether you have adult, child or concession. I had a student price which I think was about £5? It’s less than £10 regardless I think

Hi Jayne! Regrettably, due to the nature of the medieval passages, we are unable to permit dogs on tours. Kind regards, The Passages Team
