Overview
More
Overlooking the market place in the centre of Cambridge, this beautiful church dates back to 1205 - even older than the University of Cambridge! Great St Mary's was built, rebuilt, burned and built again over the centuries. The current building is largely Tudor. King Henry VII donated 100 oak trees to build its roof and Queen Elizabeth I visited the church in 1564 and gave an impressive Latin speech to the assembled scholars. Interactive touchscreens and a short film about royal Cambridge offer a perfect introduction to the history of Cambridge. Visitors can climb the tower for stunning views of King's College Chapel and the city. We also offer brass rubbing and children's activities during busier times of year. Great St Mary's is the church at the heart of Cambridge and hosts regular services, concerts, debates and community events.

Great St. Mary's overlooks the centre of Cambridge and dates back to 1205. It is a historic church and has great views from its tower over the city.

This is the University church and it has little to offer except the chance to climb the tower and view the city. It is clearly well used, the pews are numbered and it gave the impression of being a large hall and less like a...More

The church is pretty and worth a few photos but the best bit is the view from the roof of the tower. On the way up the steep winding stairs you can stop to see the bell ringing room and the bells. When you do...More

This church is a lot smaller than the chapel in Cambridge, but it offers a unique experience in climbing one of its towers. Once you get to the top, you'll be treated to an amazing view of Cambridge and the other universities in the area....More

Forget the expensive entry fee for King's or Trinity; there are other colleges as nices to give the Cambridge flavour; but most of all, spend just a few £ on climbing Great St. Mary's and be amazed by the view

This church has been standing in the middle of Cambridge for centuries. The university uses it, Stephen Hawking's funeral was there, and it's a lovely building in itself. You can climb the tower, giving a nice airial view out over the city. Worth visiting.

Visited Great St Mary’s church during the Easter school holidays. Inside the church there was plenty of children’s activities occurring. The church is five centuries old and has many interesting items. One of the main reasons people visit this church is to climb the 123...More

We came here for a mattins service which had some wonderful English music when we attended. The church was very welcoming and we had a helpful order of service to follow. Visitors of any belief would be welcomed.
