The Matthew is a replica of the Tudor ship sailed by John Cabot from Bristol 'discover' North America in 1497. The ship runs regular public trips and is available for private hire. When the ship is not sailing she is open 10am - 4pm, Tuesday - Sunday. History: After receiving a charter from Henry VII Venetian merchant John Cabot led a crew from Bristol across the Atlantic Ocean - 'the sea of darkness' - to reach the continent of North America, presumably landing at Newfoundland, and claiming the discovery for the king. The Matthew you see today is a replica of the Tudor ship, based on a huge amount of research. The ship was built between 1994 & 1996 and in 1997 it re-enacted Cabot's original journey to Newfoundland to mark the 500th anniversary of Cabot's landmark voyage of discovery.

We had a family gathering on the matthew today, it rained the whole time and there was not much shelter. We had agreed to a cream tea and the staff prepared scones and cakes and put them on a table in the rain, when we...More

Joined The Matthew for a cream tea trip and was sorely disappointed by the unfriendly service and terrible value. Many guests on board were made to feel unwelcome and commented on the rude staff. Quite frankly we’re embarrassed to be locals if this is what...More

Fantastic 4 hours with very knowledgable crew who made the whole trip wonderful. Would definitely do this again. Took our own packed lunch and drinks on board were reasonably priced.

We took our 7 year old grandson for a trip on the Matthew during the first week of the school holidays. We all really enjoyed it, especially the 7yr old who still talks about it constantly. He loved the pantomime- plenty of jokes, costumes, stories...More

Something of a Bristol icon, this is frequently moored alongside the SS Great Britain or the M Shed and we booked on one of their sailings around the floating harbour which also included a sea shanty band and a stop for fish & chips. First...More

Hi Blackth0rn, Thanks so much for taking the time to review our Sea Shanties Trip - I'm pleased to hear that you had a good time. We find that passengers like to move around the ship during trips, and of course there's only limited space...More

The Matthew is typically anchored on the Prince’s Wharf, but also does several cruise trips from 1 to 4 hours in duration. When it is in in port, entry to see the ship is free, but has a donation box. The ship is a replica...More

If you're just looking around, 10-15 minutes would be plenty. A trip is a different matter. I doubt there are toilets on board as there were no such amenities in the time of the original Matthew! You could use the ones at... More
