On a sandstone spur, this fortress stands over the Panaro valley. Documented back to 1178, it is one of the most interesting examples of fortification architecture in Emilia. In the fourteenth century it belonged to the Este family of Ferrara, but...more

This Sunday, before lunch, we were going through Vignola and decided to stop and visit Rocca di Vignola. What a treat! We only had 40 minutes (they closed @ 1:00 pm) so we couldn't see everything. The best part, after ticket purchase, we were met...More

Simply one of the most stunning castles I have ever seen. A must-visit destination to anybody visiting Modena/Bologna area (just a 60 minute train/bus ride from both). They also organise free tours (in English) and the castle itself is free entry. A real Italian treasure!

It is by far an interesting architecture. The frescos in the castle were still beautiful. With a free entry to visit, it is definitely a place worth visiting. Although, lack of maintenance could be visible. Lack of funds seems to be the answer.

We visited Rocca di Vignola in December and it was absolutely beautiful. According to my BF who is from Italy, it is better preserved than most castles. They still have beautiful original frescoes and have put together a very nice audio tour to guide you...More

We saw a few photos of Rocca di Vignola and decided to take a look. Photos don't do it justice. The keen thing about this place is the freedom with which you can explore. You wander from room to room and climb winding staircases, gaze...More

Castle visits are always popular with (male) visitors, and this one did not disappoint. Find a paid parking lot in town and just walk until you find the entrance. FREE entry, at this time, anyway.

The castle was recommended to us by our B&B hosts, and wow, we were not expecting what we found. Great castle to explore, and free english audio guides available. There has been significant restoration over the years, but it has been done with respect to...More

Nice attraction and worth visiting. Great example of a 15th century military fortress with even earlier origins to the 8th century. Lots to explore and plenty of stairs to climb and descend. Wonderful examples of preserved frescoes and great views of the surrounding area. There's...More

What a treat for young explorers! Lots of stairs to climb up to the towers and down into dungeons! Helpful and kind staff. PS steep stairs, can be a bit difficult for toddlers and elderly people. Nice view over Vignola and surroundings from the towers.

Not in my guide book, found quite by chance and really enjoyed the visit. Apart from the size, the condition, the restoration and the preserved detail, it was free to enter! The audio guide too was clever, picking up your location wirelessly and giving the...More
