If you walk to the end of the pier you can really sense the magnitude of the river. Don't recommend it for small kids, strong winds, no railings and rough water.

The park is located right by the river and offer plenty of seating, playground for kids. At low tides you can collect sea shells. Multiple free parking right beside. We spent quite a lot of time there when we were in town.
