About
The 1000 Islands History Museum provides visitors with an inviting setting to reflect on the history of the area. The building itself is build in a style reminiscent to the original cottages and grand hotels that dotted the islands of the St. Lawrence, built during the Golden Era. In the spacious exhibit halls, visitors will find dioramas, videos and interactive displays designed to educate and entertain.

Friendly staff and informative displays
Oct 2020
This was a well-kept and informative venue. The staff member with whom we interacted was friendly and knowledgeable. The gift shop had some interesting items for sale. We would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

History galore! I spent about an hour touring the exhibits after getting off of the 1000 Island Boat tour. Entry by donation. Coffee shop and gift shop on the premises.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide a review HappyTraveller0723! We are so glad to hear you had time to stop by and enjoy the museum after your boat tour. We would like to note that the coffee shop you mentioned belongs to our neighbours at the Thousand Islands Boat Museum as opposed to The History Museum so be sure to give them a review as well! ☺️

Arthur Child Heritage Museum of the 1000 Islands
Sep 2020 • Couples
Wonderful museum of the local area featuring displays of local flora and fauna on the second floor. Gift shop, washrooms and some exhibits on the main floor. Completely accessible with an Elevator to take you upstairs or choose the grand staircase. No set entrance fee but donations encouraged. Film shown upstairs on the history of Boldt Castle with a generous seating area to relax in. Very worthwhile stop while in the “Gan”!

Excellent exhibit and volunteer staff
Aug 2019
They've done an outstanding job in presenting the maritime history of the area. Of special note is the 30 minute history of the Boldt Castle. Strongly suggest seeing this video before visiting the Castle as it goes into more detail than the video at the Castle.

Oh, If I'd only had more time...
Jul 2019 • Couples
My late father's family lived in Gan for many years and some of my cousins still do. Our visit to the museum was enhanced somewhat as my Mother joined us. She could identify many of the pictures and stories displayed there. We even found a picture of my Uncle in one of the pictures of the local boys' hockey team.
I peeked into the room that contained the town archives. I would have pulled up a chair for the afternoon as I'm working on my family tree. It would be a goldmine of information. Next visit, I may have to plan accordingly.

Thank you so much for your review MsTLB! We are so glad to hear that you were able to enjoy and experience the museum with your mother and that the two of you got to see the photo of your Uncle in this years seasonal exhibit. We hope that you will come back and visit us again, when you get the chance, so that you can spend some more time looking through the archives area. If you know in advance when you will be coming, please feel free to contact us and we can put you in touch with The Gananoque Historical Society to explore the room, and any information they may have pertaining to your family history, in more detail.

Good but not very much interesting
Jul 2019 • Family
It is a donation based museum though they have good stories to read and nice artifacts but very much interesting but one can visit if have some extra time. It wont take more than 60-70 min and all you have to donate just $10 or $20 is enough.
Also, in their gift shop everything is sales tax free.

A Gem of the Thousand Islands
Jun 2019 • Friends
An American friend and I visited this gem of a museum with its striking architecture and picturesque setting. We especially enjoyed the guided tour we received. Coordinator Art Thivierge (he should be acclaimed citizen of the year for his warm hospitality) expertly guided us through 10,000 years of Thousand Islands history. The displays start at the Ice Age, include the importance of the Frontenac Arch (a UNESCO biosphere reserve), provide evidence of First Peoples’ presence and describe the area’s first explorers, missionaries and fur traders. History buffs will relish displays about the Seven Years War, War of 1812 and lifestyle of Gananoque and the Thousand -actually 1864) Islands. Visitors will also learn the meanings of 15 First Nations words for Gananoque: my favourite is “place of health” as the milder climate here invited indigenous peoples to retreat from the cold northern forest to improve their health and living conditions. Your health too will feel restored if you relax while watching the informative video on Boldt Castle and then sit on the beautiful veranda overlooking the St. Lawrence River. First, however, don’t forget to visit the gift shop, one of the best for value and selection I’ve ever visited in the Kingston area.

This is just a little museum with tons of great exhibits and information. What a wonderful find. This museum is set up so any one could enjoy it from kids to adults. Wonderful history of Gananoque and the 1000 island area plus a great film on Boldt Castle. Perfect way to spend an afternoon!

Really enjoyed this museum!
Jul 2018 • Couples
Three levels of displays, artifacts and information plus gift shop is a description that does not give this location enough credit. Prepare to spend at least an hour or two exploring thousand islands history & people - and set aside some time to pick out a souvenir or gift on the way out!

This is a donation run museum and sometimes visitors aren't sure what to donate so I'd recommend $5-10 per person and at least $20 for a family because it's really worth it.
