What a pity the monument to the FAMINE wasn't better publicised...luckily I spotted it as I drove by and was able to find parking to visit. The sculpture evokes the pain of the FAMINE very well. Good descriptive plaques explain the work. Also site provides good view of Clew Bay.

On our way to from Adare to Galway, on a country road with not much around, we stopped in Ennis at the Great Hunger Memorial which was dedicated to honor the victims (in particular the children) of the Irish potato famine that happened in the mid 1800s. It's a beautiful piece of art work and was the first to memorial constructed in Ireland to honor those who lost their lives. It depicts little Michael Rice who is starving to death and will do so if not given something to eat. His parents have both died. The written inscription is very poignant. Across the street is a large grave which I imagine contains many victims of the famine. It's worth stopping for.
