The Cathedral of our Lady of the Conception is in the city of Inhambane. It was built in the 19th century and currently fast becoming a ruin (note the damaged roof with holes). The building is one of few historic sites dating from Portuguese colonial period that are left in Inhambane. Next door is a modern style church dominating the new skyline of the old city.

A pity old heritage is not better preserved.

The 170 yr old cathedral of our lady of conception, is Absolutely and undoubtedly the most beautiful building there.

The new cathedral cannot compare, though shere size does attempt to shadow the cathedrals majesty.

The 170 yr old monument has been left to ruin and is slowly disappearing under the weeds and trees over growing the area.
Sad as it truly has such presence.

The cathedral looks quite nice, but is not operated as a tourist attraction at all. In fact when we were there it looked like it was being used as a school. It clearly hasn't been properly maintained for a few decades and is simply run-down and in desperate need of some restoration. The place was abandoned when we arrived, but we managed to find a cleaner who opened the clock tower for us. I climbed to the top, despite heavy protests from the cleaner and others in our party over the safety (the steel ladders leading up were rusty, but I made sure every step was solid before continuing). From the top, you do get a nice view, but it is a rather scary climb.

Inhambane is one of Southern Africa's most pleasant towns. Surrounded by a beautiful bay which is home to everything from Arab-style dhows to grazing dugongs, it has a magnificent location, with many fine beaches nearby. It also has a small but interesting old town, with some old Portuguese-era villas and a 19th century mosque. The most impressive single monument, however, is the city's 18th century cathedral- one of the oldest European churches south of the Zambezi. It lost of its pews in the civil war, but this time-worn old church is worth a visit.

The Catedral da Nossa Senhora da Conceição dates back to 1974 and replaced the old Inhambane Cathedral. Unfortunately it was closed and we only saw it from the outside. Portuguese architecture. I found it interesting.
Recommendable.
