- IndySigIndianapolis, Indiana4,119 contributionsAmazing views. Can’t even describe how beautiful the drive is through Chapmans Peak. Be sure to stop along the way at the many pull off sections. We watched hundreds of dolphins jumping and playing in the water below us. The scenery is beautiful and it’s not a bad drive.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 November 2023
- StormyWindLondon, United Kingdom387 contributionsSpectacularWe drove from Camps Bay past the Twelve Apostles and on bia Chapmans Peak to Hout Bay. It’s absolutely breathtaking, panoramic scenery from the stuff of films with huge craggy passes and bright blue horizon. Time it with sunset if you can. Just gorgeousVisited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 January 2024
- riocobbKilve, United Kingdom213 contributionsone of the most scenic drives I have ever experienced across the globeHiring a car in Cape Town is easy and most definitely worth it just to do the drive to Chapmans Peak. the scenery on the way back is actually even more spectacular than on the way there. We stopped off along the way and made a day of it which was just wonderfulVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2024
- Simon NLondon, United Kingdom191 contributionsGreat drive with incredible viewsAfter reading about the famous drive, I definitely wanted to drive the route. The drive itself is pretty special, especially surrounded by amazing views on one side, and then towering cliffs on the other. There are certain points on the route where you can park to take pictures, or just admire the views. The only thing to add is that though the drive is great, I think I might have had too high expectations hence only 4*s. It may also be the fact the weather was pretty miserable that day, and the driver in front kept on stopping abruptly so the drive wasn't as smooth and enjoyable as it could be. Note you do have to pay a toll charge in order to drive the route.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 March 2024
- KnitsbyConnie500 contributionsDrive down Chapman’s Peak for beautiful vistas of the coastline, mountain side and little hamlets aroundAs part of the Gate 1 South African Safari Tour we drove down the Cape Town peninsula along the Chapman’s Peak Drive. Our bus seemed continuously perched on the edge of the road as we saw the beautiful scenery of the area. It was our time to just sit back and enjoy the view.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 16 April 2024

The views at Chapman's Peak Drive is absolutely stunning, it's basically seeing stuff on National Geography or Discovery in real life. There are a few roadside stops you can make to take photos and soak in the views. We loved it so much that we did it twice, once in the morning and then in the evening right before sunset.

The drive along Chapman’s Peak is breathtaking. The road winds around the mountains, along the coast and there are plenty of spots to stop and take pictures.
This is a toll road which only accepts credit card payments from SA nationals, so be prepared to wait if you only have a debit card to pay with (like us!), or make sure you have some cash.

If you are planning on heading down the cape from Cape Town then the Chapman's Peak Drive is definitely the route to take. The views are stunning and the road is a pleasure to drive on. It is well worth the toll fee (which is only a few pounds) to make the most of driving down to southern parts of the cape.

One of my favourite drives in the Cape Town area has to be Chapmans Peak. This winding, narrow pass is beautiful in all ways from the parts where it is cuts into the mountain to the amazing views of the ocean, with Houtbay and Noordhoek on either end. There are ample places to pull over and take in the views with the "main" stop also having ablution facilities. It is good to note that it can get very busy and that it is frequently used by cyclists, but luckily there are designated bicycle lanes. This pass does have a tollgate on the Houtbay side, but there is clear signage on both sides indicating the fees. There are also numerous tour companies that do drives here if you aren't looking to do the drive yourself, and if you haven't visited it yet I recommend you put it on your To-Do list.

We’ve been on many scenic drives and this one ranks amongst the best. Breathtaking views of the coastline and the wonderful sea. Pity there weren’t more viewpoint spots cos there was limited parking. Maybe we were lucky but the traffic happily flowed. Believe the toll price had increased for the peak holiday season but 50R was worth every rand.

Definitely one of the highlights of our road trip from Cape Town Waterfront to Cape point. The winding road hugs the mountain side with continuous views of the ocean.
Also plenty of places to stop to take full advantage of the spectacular views.
A small entry fee is payable but well worth it.

This is such a spectacular drive, certainly deserving its rating as one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the world. Gorgeous beaches, stunning panoramas around every turn. Lots of turns and twists so take your motion sickness medicine if you are prone to that. If you are in Cape Town, this drive should definitely not be missed. We had a driver and guide, which is the what I recommend; that way everyone gets to take in spectacular scenery.

Driving from Misty Cliffs to Capetown Chapman’s Peak Drive is route not to be missed. Wonderful views on the waves smashing on the cliffs force you to stop. Men hanging on the iron nets that protect from rocks falling on the streets, repairing them, are an extra attraction.

We first drove this road 6 years ago and we couldn’t wait to see the views again. It was just as grand to see it again. On clear days the water is a beautiful turquoise blue color. You must see this if you’re in the area!

Hi,
We're planning a day in Simon town in August and were hoping to use Uber to return to cape town via Chapmans Peak Drive. Is it possible to ask to driver to stop at key viewpoints and just keep the meter running?
Is it possible to call for Uber from Simon town to CT?
Written 27 July 2023
Hey
You will most definitely be able to order an Uber from Simonstown to Cape Town, but you will need to confirm with the Uber driver directly if they will be willing to take the route via Chapman's Peak Drive and what the additional cost would be to stop at the various viewpoints.

Hi. I would really appreciate if you could help me with certain information. I am planning to go there on Saturday, any idea how to know if it would be open or not as everywhere its written its abruptly closed. I really don't wanna drive all the way to see a closed sign. Also i was very keen to see a beach. Would there be nice beach on this driveway? I would he coming to kuils river and was wanting to visit kirstenbosch botanical garden on the way before going for chapman peak drive. Do you think its possible keeping time in mind. I know a lot of questions, but new here at Cape town. Would appreciate whatever help possible. If any suggestions of making a change would be glad to see. Thanks

The most accurate way to find out would be to take a drive down to Hout Bay and pass the signs that announce the status of Chapman's Peak Drive. The website is generally accurate, but you never know.

Hi All, Currently planning a trip to Cape Town and will most probably be doing Chapies between 20th and the 25th, and would need some advice :
1 - Better do it in the morning or afternoon ? (If morning, feel free to recomment a nice breakfast place ;)
2 - Better do it from Hout Bay to Noordhoek or vice & versa ?
Thanks a lot for your help!

It doesn't matter what time I would do Hout bay to Noordhoek. Hout Bay is amazing so find a restaurant their.

i want to visit chapeman peak riding a Bicycle or a scotter from cape town is that possible? or too long distance and if is it possible how should i rent this bicycle?
Also i heard that chapman is near to boulder beach where penguins exist.. can i visit the both in one day riding bicycle. . specify also if there any other transportation like buses..
Written 23 June 2017
You can hire a scooter in town to travel across Chapmans Peak drive and from there you can travel to Boulders Beach to see the penguins. They are both lovely destinations to visit. You can rent a scooter in Cape Town. Take note that during our rainy season Chapmans Peak drive might be closed from time to time due to possible rock falls. When this road is open it is very safe to travel.

Do you have to rent a car to go see Chapmans Peak or is it possible to get an Uber, Do any bus tours go here?
Written 21 February 2017
Hi Karen,
If you don't have your own transport then you will need a car.
Options are:
1. Rent a car
2. Uber or taxi
3. Book a tour to Cape Point and combine it with a visit to the SW tip of Africa and visiting the African penguin colony at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town.
We recommend Cape Point Route for day tours but there are many very good day tour operators.
Regards,

I am not good with heights & roads close to edge of cliffs. Is this drive like this?
Written 22 January 2017
I would not worry. It is beautiful and spectacular, but nothing like a moutain road in terms of curves and void.

Anyone know if you have to rent a car to do chapmans peak drive?
We dont plan to rent a car and wonder if busses to wine country take this route?
we hoped to do a motorcycle tour or rent a motrocycle for a day but there seems to be none available when we are there nov. 12-15, 2016.

Hi Guys..
We are planning to vist next week, our group will stay at camps bay and we want to a day trip all the way to cape of good hope.
I was hoping to leave for cape of good hope in the morning, and make our way back through bolders beach, hout bay and chapmans peak for sunset..
however.. our tour guide advises us to start with chapmans peak and go towards cape of good hope..
can anyone suggest if either option is preferable.. my logic of doing it backwards is to be closer to home in the evening and also experience sunset at the peak.
thanks for you time and advise..
Written 3 August 2016
I agree with your guide - the sunset is better at Cape of Good Hope. I think the evening sunset at Chapman's peak will not be good for Photos - sun will be in your eyes. We went from Capetown to Cape of Good Hope the way your guide suggested and it worked well.
