This was the most amazing four day rafting trip. It was very relaxing and the two guides spoilt us rotten. The trip takes you to some very remote places and allows you to totally disconnect with daily life. I can highly recommend the trip and found Gravity Adventures to run a very professional opertaion. Thanks to Ian and Max for all their hard work to make the trip so special.

We have just returned from our Thunder Alley trip which was expertly lead by Jono and supported by his incredible team of guides: Seamus, Jason and Tyler.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Gravity Adventures for such a superb time on the Orange River. The professional, friendly and entertaining service received by the guides was incredible and beyond the call-of-duty. Our group comprised 11 children (aged 7 to 15) and the guides were particularly good with them; ensuring their safety, patiently dealing with a LOT of questions and participating in much friendly banter. Furthermore, the food was outstanding and exceeded our expectations. These guys are a real asset to the company.
We thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and had a wonderful time with our mate and families, connecting with nature and soaking up the beautiful environment. We will definitely be back.

We just returned from the most awesome 4 day Thunder Alley trip in the Oct school holidays.
What a life changing experience!
We were a group of 21 people, with children aged between 10 and 13.
Our group was steered by the most wonderful person, guide and leader.
Ian, you made such an impression on us.
Thank you for your attention to detail in making us feel safe whilst making the tour awesome and fun!
Seamus, Tailor and Nkosi, you guys ROCK!
They are the most positive friendly guys you will ever meet. They sing and joke and spend time with the kids! Thank you!
The trip was fully catered for, and you cannot imagine how great the food is.
We would be tired after a day of rowing, and before you know it, you are being called to a table (with table cloth and all) to the most amazing food.
On the 3rd night you are spoilt with malva pudding baked on the fire...5 star stuff!!
This trip was such a memorable experience for us as a family.
Thank you Team Gravity!

For a great adventure, wonderful time spent with family and friends and experiencing a beautiful environment, the Orange River is something that all South Africans should do at some time in their lifetime. Gravity were wonderful hosts - experienced, friendly guides and delicious meals. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

We went on a weekend rafting adventure with Gravity on the Doring river. It was fun, well organised, the food was great and we had a blast. Highly recommend it!

I went on a rafting trip over the festive season with my 10 year old son. It was a real African adventure and a million miles away from our life in London. We really felt like we had stepped into an African Adventure. I can not fault the service provided it was five star-all the way we felt very well looked after. I not would recommend this trip for families. In the words of my son ' it was amazing, a once in a life time trip'. He is already asking when we can go again! Thanks guys for an amazing time.

If getting the kids to have a blast and the adults to have a roughing it out adventure, then white water rafting on the Orange River is as much for you as it was for us. Moderate rapids, beautiful scenery, excellent Guides (just bring along mozzie repellent!) Our visit was in 2015, so the service and experience may well be even better now!

An amazing trip that combines a mix of activity, adventure, relaxation and a great way to meet people. If you are into luxury and 5-star pampering then this is not for you.
You need to be comfortable with camping, water, paddling, going to the toilet in the bush and most importantly, ready to have an amazing trip. The scenery is breathtaking, the heat is scorching (temperatures regularly around 40 degrees celsius) and the experience is worth it.
Gravity Tours helps you take care of everything except getting to the river starting point, although we were coming from different travel points to their head office based in Cape Town. I'm sure they would assist travelers if asked. Their team is incredibly helpful over email so where you have queries etc, they are only an email away :)
On the trip itself I was amazed at the amount and variety of food we received on our 4-day trip. For those of you that are conscious about quality of food and nutrition, there is an excellent balance of protein, carbs etc to ensure you recover and are able to paddle the following day.
We had river guides with more than 6yrs Orange River experience and they take care of everything from safety briefings for rapids to general safety and fun in between.
There are great little additional activities for you to do, especially walks, hiking, swimming and riding rapids.
Another terrific feature of the Gravity Tours, is the group size. While I've not been on other tours down the river, I have been informed of groups sizes up to 200 people. This makes life very challenging for the river guides.
Our group size was 27 (incl the guides). You get personal attention, it is always quiet around you while on the river, and you can really engage with your group.
You can mix it up from a few of you to organizing friends/family for the entire group - Gravity is very flexibly in this regard.
If you are a fishing enthusiast (fly or lure) I would recommend taking a rod. There is Yellow Fish and Kaap. I'm not on the catch-and-release / size policy but Gravity can inform you.
Last tip, we had our trip end on new year's eve, and then partied on the river - this was a great way to see the new year in.
Simply put, amazing and definitely worth doing with friends!

A group of five of us booked a white water rafting trip on the Palmiet River (Betty's Bay) in July. We were fortunate that the weekend before there was a huge storm and so for our day the river was running high and very quickly. The weather though was sunny and by jingo you certainly build up a sweat carrying your inflatable canoe along the path before you can put it in the water. That bit was unexpected and seemed to go on forever, I can imagine some folk might struggle with the walk which must have been close to a kilometer in length carrying a very awkwardly shaped boat over some very slippery rocks and avoiding other tree borne obstacles.
Before we started the hike though we had a thorough briefing from our guide and I was impressed how he concentrated on the safety aspects of the event to come...
Once in the water it was all fun and my paddle partner and I having no skill whatsoever and mostly because we were laughing so much did many of the rapids backwards. Our canoe was also magnetically drawn to every clump of reeds where we would get stuck and laugh.
We came out of the canoe twice - the very first rapid was a bit scary as you are sucked downwards before you pop up like a champagne cork and I would have liked a warning about that as the three of us that went in at that rapid all experienced the same dragging downwards for a second or two. One of our party was really spooked by that and bailed immediately. Our guide was on the ball the whole time - watching and advising, and took his role extremely seriously which gave me a great deal of confidence. We ended the trip at the Palmiet Bridge and decided not to do the final rapid - which we were advised is a difficult one if you come out of the canoe.... which of course Avril and I would have! It was an exhilerating experience, I would do it all again tomorrow and recommend the trip and Gravity with the highest praise.

We spent 2 nights on the river and three days rafting with Morganne and Johno and had a fantastic time and an over the top nature experience. The hot temperatures, the warm river water, the awesome food and the professionalism of the guides made it a trip we will never forget. Worth every cent and every minute.
Read the kit list properly and take with you as good quality equipment as you can afford. Take lots of snacks and for heaven's sake do not forget a water bottle. It is hot out there! Thank you for a fantastic experience.
Make sure to take tents with you for the nights at the camp because accommodation there is not included. Camping chairs are a good plus also.

Hello,
Wanted to ask a few questions
1) Is there transport from cape town to the Orange river?
2) What kind of transport? Car? Plane?
3) Do you conduct the trip in May and June?

Hi
We plan to do a Orange River canoe trip on the South-African side. We have to choose between Kalahari Outventures (from Augrabies) and Gravity Adventures (from Pofadder/Onseepkrans).
Any recommendations?
Regards
Written 9 October 2015
Hi there
Both Kalahari Outventures and Gravity (ourselves) are solid operators with excellent guides and involved owners. Both are active members of the African Paddling Association and comply with the requirement of an annual survey by SAMSA. The main difference lies in the river sections they run trips on. Gravity operates on the Gorge section from Onseepkans. We are the only permanent operator here and have our own base camp on the river banks where we start all of our trips. The Gorge section offers a range of conditions including lots of flowing water, fun rapids and a couple of good whitewater sections. It is rated class 3 to class 3+, depending on water levels. For this reason, we use inflatables ('crocs') rather than canoes and also work on a ratio of 1 guide to 8 clients. We have a reputation for excellence and always get great feedback on our guides and our catering! Hope this helps!
thanks,
Marie-Louise Kellett
