It is one of the famous Sati Pith in India. Naturally it attracts a lot of devotees round the year. Ma Tara idol is great, Believers should pay their worship from their heart. If you look around, you will feel that Ma Tara has forgiven those who run and maintain the temple including so called Pandas for their misdeeds. The area inside and around the temple is full of dog and dog sheet. Dirty garbages are spread in many places around the temple. There are paid queue for early visit without any set charges and without any receipt. The queue without charges will take hours to visit. In crowded days huge rush will push each other at small entry to the temple which is suffocating, and difficult for elderly people and children. Panda raj is also there like many other places. The temple authority should follow Dwakshineswar temple to learn Cleanliness , disciplinned and well organized arrangements. If someone wants to pay their worship without much rush, then they should avoid special puja days plus Saturdays/ Sundays and choose early morning (5/30-6/30 AM) time.

Place gives goosebumps as you find yourself in such a religious and historically relevant place . Yes It has touts , filth , beggars , animal sacrifice , yet its religious sanctity is unquestionable. There is an aura of supreme energy in the premises . ( subject to religious belief)

Here are several legends narrated on the origin and importance of this place,A well-known legend relates to the Shakti Piths.Among piths**, Tarapith is a siddha pith, which grants enlightenment, wisdom, happiness and siddhis ("supernatural powers") .Tarpith is wellknown as a Trantrick place... tantricks used to do black magics on people..As I'm not having any experience,I can't say what actually "Tantra" is. But... after sunset the burning ground where Saint Bamakhepa (1837–1911) perfected his yoga and Tantric sadhana (worship) and where his Crimation Ground is located..lots of "Tantra Sadhana" you can watch. As there is no electricity, you'll feel something different..which I can't express.
feet of Sati.... is also a must visit nearby the temple(beside Cremation ground).

I used to go to Daksineswar temple for puja regularly ..Every time I felt highly unsatisfied after giving puja. I go there just to take a Darshan of dakshineswari Maa for mental satisfaction.
But if you are ready to pay li'll bit, you will feel very much satisfied after giving puja and you can even touch the actual Idol(it's actually a rock). A different spiritual feeling will cover up your entire mind and body...

**Shakti Piths:::: Goddess Sati, the consort of Shiva, felt insulted when her father Daksha did not invite Shiva to the great yagna (fire-sacrifice) he organized. Unable to bear this humiliation, Sati gave up her life by jumping into the yagna fire. Infuriated by this tragic turn of events, Shiva went wild. Then, god Vishnu, in order to pacify Shiva decimated the body of Sati with his discus (Chakra). Sati's body part fell all over the Indian subcontinent. The places where the body parts fell – have become centres of worship of the Goddess in different manifestations. There are 51 such holy temples which are called the Shakti Piths; Sage Vasishtha had seen this form and worshipped goddess Sati in the form of Tara.

Tips for Travelers:

to do the perfect Puja you may prefer an Amabasya..(but very much crowd you have to face)

*you start from Kolkata by a Mail Train via Rampurhut. Don't arrive at Tarapith Road(no further communication is available from this station).. Arrival at Rampurhut is recommended. Take rest for sometime..Check in Hotel..Then..after 3 pm(as the weather is very hot & Humid during summer)..

*Go for Site Seeing..Sandha Arti(reach by 6 to 6:15 is recommended).. After watching sandha Aarti go to Burning Ghat, which becomes basically a Tantra place after Sunset. Sati's Feet is other attraction of the place.

*Talk to any shop nearby for watching puja early in the early morning and want to touch the Real Idol...then the Real Rock Idol takes bath with Alchohol, Honey, Oil, ghee etc. and wears new sharees gifted by lots of Followers. They may charge a huge amount of money...it depends upon no of your group members. You can touch the real Rock Idol which is covered by a lead throughout whole day.after Puja you may have Prashad of Aarti. Front gate of Mandir opens nearly by 6:30am..Before aarti.

*Then you come back to Hotel and take rest..again go for Non-veg Bhog as lunch. Near about 4pm Shahid Express leaves from Rampurhut...try to come by this train. You will reach Howrah..around 8pm.

*Book your ticket and Hotel before journey.

Tarapith is a small temple town near Rampurhat in Birbhum district of the Indian state of West Bengal, known for its Tantric temple and its adjoining cremation grounds where Tantric rites are performed. There are several legends narrated on the origin and importance of this place, all related to the goddess Tara deified in the Tarapith temple.

A well-known legend relates to the Shakti Piths. Shiva had drunk the poison that had emerged by the churning of the cosmic oceans, to save the universe. To relive him of the intense burning in his throat, Sati “in the form of Tara“ breast fed Shiva to relieve him of the effect of poison in his throat.

Another local narration is that Vasishtha chose this place for worship of Sati as it was already known as a Tarapith.Among piths, Tarapith is a siddha pith, which grants enlightenment, wisdom, happiness and Siddhis ("supernatural powers") .

Tarapith is also famous for Bamakhepa known as the 'mad saint', who worshipped in the temple and resided in the cremation grounds as a mendicant and practised and perfected Yoga and the Tantric art under the tutelage of another famous saint known as the Kailashpathi Baba. Bama Khepa dedicated his entire life to the worship of mother Tara. His ashram is also located close to the temple . All must visit this place atleast once .

The nearest railway station is Rampurhat, which is connected to major stations like Howrah and Sealdah. Taxi / Auto Rickshaws / Bus / Rickshaws etc. are available from Rampurhat Station to Tarapith , which is around 10 Kms. Strictly avoid unknown person . There are lot of hotels surrounding temple .

We stayed at Hotel Tara Ma Bhawan which is located at Tinmatha More , Tarapith – 731 233 , District : Birbhum , West Bengal . Phone No. : +91 94340 31395 . Its a budget hotel , preferred by Family, Group, Single, Couple travelers . Tara Ma Bhawan is a neat & clean hotel with homely atmosphere . Its very nearer to Tara Ma Temple .
Our Guide & Pujari was great . We have visited many temples of our country but not seen a honest Pujari like him . Contact details : Sri Manoj Chatterjee , Phone No. +91 94346 35140 . Any body can call him for Tara Ma Darshan , Hotel Booking & Sight Seeing .

Pretty well organized darshad if you can get a dependable Priest from one of the larger shops selling prasad in the temple complex. My experience was truly a blessed one. Loved it! Recommend a visit to the burning ghat at night. it is an ethereal experience to watch the Tantriks in action!!!

On 1st January 2013, we four friends decided to visit Tarapith to visit Maa Tara on 12th. Accordingly on 12th January early morning we started for Tarapith. Tarapith is about 270 Km away from Kolkata in the district of Birbhum. We proceeded through NH2. Up to Darjeeling More ( After Panagarh) it is a straight road. From Darjeeling more we turned right and drove through Moregram Bypass, we crossed Ilambazar, Suri and then finally reached Tarapith. After driving about 1 hour 20 mins we reached Shaktigarh. It is 15 minutes before Bardhaman. There are plenty of roadside shops which are very popular for selling of “Langcha” – A kind of Bengali Sweet. We stopped at “Langcha Dham”. We reached Darjeeling More. This place comes after Panagarh. Moregram Expressway starts from here. This expressway connects with NH34 at Moregram. People from Bankura, Bardhaman, Purulia and Birbhum use this road to each North Bengal. We stopped here for tea break. We are approaching Tarapith. This is a small road which is connected from Moregram Expressway to Tarapith. There are three roads which connect from Tarapith to Moregram Expressway. We are using the road which bifurcates at Tarapith Village. We boarded at Hotel Maa Tara. This property is in good location, near Mandir. Property owned by Larica Group. Hotel Staffs are very helpful and eager to serve. Double bed room rent ranges from Rs.750/- to Rs.900/- for each day. Standing in a Que. We are entering into Tarapith Temple. Mandir Trust has made a lot of improvement inside the Mandir Campus. Entire Mandir Campus is neat and clean. You can choose ”Free”, “Rs100″ and “Rs200″ line to enter into the Mandir Campus. This is all about Tarapith Tour. On the Next Day after completion of Puja we went for lunch and left for Kolkata.

No, I am not talking about the general pickpocketing or snatching risk, I am talking about a chance of accident . The space is really really small inside the temple. Whereas no control for the devotees. Although in normal puja time( which is from morning 8 am) is less risky as people does not allowed to enter inside the temple. But if any devotees want to view or touch the goddess they have to come at morning 3 am. That time they can perform a bathing of the MURTI. Otherwise is good place.
