The journey to this church is part of the experience. Even small coaches cannot reach the top of the mountain so you have to transfer to a minibus for the final mile or 2 on a very bendy road. The views are amazing. The church itself is prominent and set in small well tended and peaceful grounds. There are a couple of balconies on either side of the entrance which again provide good views. Inside there is the main alter with a number of chapels below all decorated with paintings representing the old and new testaments. At the transfer point on the way down you can try the local pomegranate juice.

Although breezy and cold, the sky was deep blue and the views from the top stunning when we visited. Even more, though, was the view inside this gorgeous church with magnificent mosaics. For you history buffs, there are even glass covered floor cut-outs to see remnants of the 4th century church that was here until the Crusaders lost it to Saladin, as well as the rock on which Jesus was transfigured.
TIP 1: Catholics should time their visit to coincide with a mass said in the lower altar - very memorable!
TIP 2: Don’t miss the practically hidden chapels with beautiful frescos of Elijah and Moses.

It takes time to visit here because we have to wait for small vans to go up the hill on a short drive, sometimes there are crowds and there is a wait. There is a majestic church with beautiful grounds, including ruins on one side and a wonderful view vista on the other. Everything closes just at dusk, we made it just in time to see the church before they shooed us out!

Mount Tabor is a small hill.Pine forest covered the elevation. The Sea of Galilee is nearby. There are a Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic churches, Franciscan monasteries and Byzantine ruins on the hilltop.
The Transfiguration of Christ is one of the 5 milestones. Jesus began to radiate and conversed with Moses and Elijah on this hill. He was proclaimed the Son of God on Mount Tabor. The transfiguration uplifted Jesus above both the prophets of Judaism.
We are inside the Church of Transfiguration. It is a basilica church dedicated to Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. There are 2 chapels and one main church clustered into a building. The Grotto of Christ is at the center of the church. The chapels of Elijah and Moses are beside.
The Church of Transfiguration was built next to the surrounding ruins. The church was designed by Antonio Barluzzi, built in 1924, and ministered by the Franciscans.

Unforgettable day tbh. Climbed up with two friends and my boss. He then met two more mates at the top who no-one had seen for literally ages. The view was incredible. Like actually unbelievable. Very bright - recommend sunglasses. Weather turned a bit cloudy. Wanted to stay but no camping allowed.

Visited last Saturday. There are several lookouts on the way up which are worth the stop, especially one before the peak with beautiful view of Jezreel Valley. We barely found a parking spot just at the entrance gate. In case there are no parking spots take the left turn to the Greek Orthodox church as usually it is less visited. The view from the top is really nice. Check carefully the opening hours of the church (Church of the Transfiguration Sun - Fri 8:00 - 17:00, Sat 8:00 - 12:00 / 14:00 - 17:00) as it was closed when we came.

Despite warnings we read on Tripadvisor and in other places, we found it very easy to drive up Mount Tabor instead of waiting for a shuttle bus at the bottom. From what we read, we were under the impression that the approximately 3km drive was on an extremely steep and narrow road with dangerous hairpin turns one after the other. Cars that try to make the climb can even conk out and drift backward ramming into your car. And if you make it to the top, there is very limited parking anyway. We found none of this to be true. Quite by accident, our navigator took us up this very road. It’s a perfectly safe and well-paved road that is plenty wide for two 12 person shuttle buses. There’s a stone guard rail on the outside all the way up. There are even some turnouts for panorama views. Yes, there are some hairpin turns but nothing out of the ordinary. It was a normal road up a hillside with some twists and turns. When we got to the top, we found a large parking lot after taking the right fork heading to the Basilica of the Transfiguration. This parking lot precedes an entry drive that is lined with trees. There is a Private Property sign at the beginning of the entry drive, but we decided to drive in anyway to see just how far the walk was to the Basilica. After a couple hundred meters, we found another large parking lot where we later learned that the shuttle buses drop their passengers. We parked here and walked straight into the Basilica grounds. The entire place was empty since we arrived shortly after opening time at 8am. We had the whole place to ourselves. About 20 minutes later, the shuttle buses started arriving dropping off a flood of tourists. By then we were done and drove a 1 km loop to the Greek Orthodox Church (no direct path to walk there). It was not open as expected. No great photos opportunities here either. Our intention when we started in the morning was to arrive at the shuttle bus departure point at 8am to get ahead of the tour bus groups. Some people on Tripadvisor complained of having to wait an hour or two to get a seat. We wanted to avoid this. And we certainly did with our navigator taking us right to the top. We never even saw the shuttle bus stop. Driving up was fast and easy, especially if you go early.

The beautiful and important mountain witnessed history of m'any wars for justice.Jesus accompanied by disciples went to the Mountain.The Church The Basilica of the Transfiguration' was here, last one being built in 1924 under Catholics Management, having three Holy Chapels under the name of Jesus,Moses & Elisa

An easy bus ride from Afula, Mt Tabor is a healthy hiking experience in northern Israel. Beautiful vistas of small villages and rolling farmland. Historic monastery to explore too.

The ride up the mountain had some stunning views but when you reached the gate a sign said private property next to a bord stating opening hours which was quite confusing but it wa ok to go through the gate and see the place where Jesus was transfigured in Front of the disciples

Hello all. I have a group of 24 mixed of adults, childrens and an infants. We have in our program to visit Mt Tabor. Anybody have any idea how much for the transport at the botom of the mountain to take us up?

It will be my first time in Israel next year and am staying at the Casear Premier Hotel in Tiberias and would like to Climb Mount Tabor as a daytrip in January 2019. Is this feasible please? I am very fit and hike a lot in my home country of Wales. Are there taxis that would go to the base of the mountain? Thanks so much. Beth
