Berkeley University funded the excavation and partial restoration of this important site and the results are informative, understandable and very easy to look at. It's a beautiful location too. Sadly the cooperation between California and the responsible Greek authorities seems to have come to a screeching halt so the recommendation is to visit soon before it slips back into the somnolent disarray of most 'official' Greek archaeological sites.

Top site in the history of Greece, it includes the magnificent temple of Zeus, the athletes' bath, the museum and stadium, which has been recently reopened to the public, all included in the 6-euro ticket. Quite impressive and pleasant, with a temple displaying all 3 classical orders: doric, ionic and corinthian. Beautiful underground access to the stadium, used by the athletes 3 centuries BC.

Archaia Nemea is an ancient site that lies roughly in the middle of the way from Corinth to Napflion. I visited via car, so I cannot comment on the public transportation situation.
The site is steeped in history, being linked to Heracles and his 12 Labours (namely, the Lion of Nepean, whom Heracles had to strangle with bare hands).
The site is dominated by the Temple imof Zeus from roughly 330s BCE. A few of its columns are actual recent reconstruction, but this fact does not subtract from the prominence of the monument. The temple is extremely photogenic, so the photographers will find it a delight.
The site further features numerous excavation areas and a museum. An ancient stadium is short distance away in a separate area. When I visited, the stadium was closed (not sure why), but from my understanding, the access to the ancient stadium is included on the entrance ticket to Archaia Nemea.
The site and museum are fairly small, so it would probably take you around 30 minutes to see everything.
Archaia Nemea is a great quick stop to break down any drive. Given its historic ties to prominent Greek myths, this site should not be overlooked by any Ancient Greece history enthusiast.

It is about an hour and a half drive from Athens airport by Taxi. There are two locations within a half a mile of each other. One is a museum with temple ruins and the other is a stadium that operated for many centuries. I came at opening time and I was the only one in the complex. The entrance fee can be purchased for both locations. The temple has been carefully reconstructed in some parts and it pretty impressive. There is a reconstructed bath area which is interesting to explore. Finally, you should visit the museum that is well laid out with many ancient artifacts. After a visit to the temple, one should visit the stadium which is up the hill. The most impressive part of the stadium was the well preserved tunnel entrance. The whole archeological site is located in a farm area with wine gardens and olive trees. There are no restaurants around. You definitively need transportation to visit this site. This area is also famous for its wine.

Being in Ancient Nemea was like walking through history and I was very happy that I made the time to stop and explore while in the area.

Very good museum. I suggest you visit it before moving onto the site so you will more clearly understand what you are looking at.
Very few tourists there which made it more enjoyable. A group of archeological students were working there when we visited which was interesting. They hadn’t found much but it was interesting to see the process.
Don’t miss the arena which is at a different site.

Ancient Nemea surprised us as one of the top ancient sites that we visited in Greece.

We were staying in Nafplio and had made a day trip of visiting ancient Corinth, acrocorinth, and ancient Nemea.

Ancient Nemea was not crowded and we had the entire place to ourselves the afternoon we visited in May.

What amazed me is how you could actually walk up into the temple and touch the columns. You get a great perspective of their height and stature when you’re standing inside the temple next to them. That was unique of ancient Nemea that we didn’t encounter other places.

The small museum was nice as well and the location of the site is set in a beautiful place surrounded by hills.

Don’t miss the ancient stadium a 1 minute drive away. There you can walk the underground tunnel the athletes would have used which is another unique experience different from the other sites that hosted the ancient games.

Really a surprise for us was how ancient Nemea was one of the favorite things we experienced in Greece.

After visiting the museum we entered the site. First there are some remnants of the basilica, use your memory from the museum miniature re-build because there is not much left over. Secondly the baths which are interesting at the back where you can see the ancient sinks. Finally the Zeus temple itself, there have been some work to it so the number of columns have reached 9 now. It gives its appearance something extra. Behind the temple is a workshop with photographs about the restoration works. Entrance fee includes the stadium some 200 meters up the road. Especially interesting there is the tunnel towards the stadium. In Olympia it’s only some stones, here you can see almost the complete tunnel.

It is a very interesting ancient place which I fear is not so much promoted and known to Greeks and tourists as well.
