Great 5km trek, it's actually 4,4
The route is beautiful/scenic and has lots of shade. Please carry water and some snacks. For first timers, it isn't a walk in the park. Set aside about 2 hours for the hike.
I plea to all, please pick up after yourself, it's disturbing finding litter on the route.

I got there at 6:30, the office opens at 7 but Nosipho was very helpful and explained what was available as far as activities and walks go.
I did the 5km trail which was really nice (best to be done early in summer as it gets very hot)
I took my own water and snacks as advised by other reviewers.
I only got a few photos of birds and my advice is to try arrange a guide to spot and identify, that would make the walk a lot better. I’ll definitely go back.

Enjoyed the forest walk, some very interesting trees, lots of butterflys and forest life. Not a difficult walk, some areas can be a little slippery if there has been a lot of rain. Take your own water, there is nowhere to buy anything. Actual info centre and artefact display area run down and almost deserted, had to look for someone at the gate to pay entrance fee to.

This was a nice place to hike. We did a 2hr bike and it was very pretty, however some of the trails were overgrown. I went with my wife and three kids (7)(5)&(3). We picnicked half way through and enjoyed a nice view. We were a little disappointed we did not see any animals. We saw their poop though! LOL. Overall it was a nice place to hike and at 70 rand for the entire family it a great deal.

Lovely morning outing from Zinkwazi Beach. Both trails were lovely, lots of butterflies and different trees to identify. Camp sites very basic, yet just what nature lovers need.
For day visitors, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy once you return from your walk.

AT Harold Johnson you can chose a long or a shorter hike filled with bird life and labeled trees. Learn bit about trees as you hike and exercise. The zebra are friendly and it is a good place to braai or to take a packed lunch.

We were looking for a place fairly close to home to go for a good walk / hike.
I found the Harold Johnson Reserve on the KZN Parks site. The facilities are failry simple but clean and tidy.
We did the 5km Bushbuck Trail - and we were pleasantly suprised. The trail rolls up and down the hills above the Tugela River - on our walk we saw Zebra, Impala and lots of pretty butterflies. The trail took us about 90 minutes to complete - we are fairly fit so it may take up to 2 hrs depending on your fitness.
The camping sites are rustic but really look quite nice if this is your thing - particularly the one on top of the hill overlooking the valley and river below.
It was a good choice for a good walk out in the bush so close to home - and you will only see a few other people here which is enjoyable too.
