About
Matroosberg Reserve, is a Private Nature Reserve 35km outside of Ceres, well known for it's snow during winter and beautiful summer days and crystal pools during summer. Matroosberg Peak is also the highest mountain in the Boland region and because the owners of Matroosberg value Family Life and Adventure, we refer to Matroosberg as Peak of Life or Peak of Adventure. We offer a wide range of activities, have one of the top 10 4x4 trails in SA. But even though we are a big establishment, you will still receive personal attention from the family who owns it, for they really go the extra mile to make your stay as comfortable as possible. This is one of the only self catering establishments, where you can have the services of a butler...how cool is that... Matroosberg offers Hotel service, for guests with an self-catering budget!

Beautiful place and peaceful. Accommodation is very basic but still nice and very affordable. The food is out of this world and the entertainment area is stunning. A special thanks to Heike who works really hard to keep everyone happy. She is brilliant at her job. Thank you for making our stay special.

There has been a lot of hype about the recent snowfall. However, one cannot actually get to see the snow in Matroosberg. Unless you have a 4 x 4 and are willing to hike up to the top of the mountain.
The gravel road is muddy, slippery and dangerous, water everywhere and just no snow avail for the average visitor to experience.
Very disappointing.

I have been struggling for 4 weeks to get my deposit paid back to me, no luck to date. This is despite weekly emails and phone calls requesting payment. Cannot recommend to anyone to visit Matroosberg reserve.

The snow came and we took a spontaneous drive from Cape Town to Matroosberg, which in itself is a beautiful drive. The joy of a road trip is not just in the pleasure of the open road ahead. It’s also in the majesty of the scenery and the thrill of discovering little towns, rivers, fauna and flora along the way.

There was lots of snow already along the Bo-Swaarmoed Road, leading up the mountain towards Matroosberg, but with that also a lot of people and cars. Very happy that we did indeed decided to go into the reserve and enjoy the peaceful nature.

Lovely break in Matroosberg. Nature right on your doorstep, plenty of hiking, running and photography opportunities.
Our self-catering lakeside cottage was small, but did the job. Very cold in winter, and there were a few leaks in the door and roof, but nothing too serious. Some amazing full day hikes if you are brave enough - we chose to stay closer to the farm and did a couple of half-day, well-signposted walks.

We left at 6 am from Cape Town to see the snow. Please please leave this early or earlier. You have to have your permit by 11 to go and see the snow. You park at the parking lot then queue to get your permit which is R60.The toilet and permit queue was at least 1 hour long.
Take chairs to sit on when you get to the snow and alot of food because as weird as it is making a snowman makes u tired and hungry. Actually is quite hard work.
A tip is to take extra clean shoes and clothes for the kids or for yourself otherwise you will be wet and muddy the whole drive home.
On our way back the people who decided to leave CT after breakfast had no idea what was in store for them. The traffic was horrendous for them. About a 5hour traffic jam approx from Bainskloof all the way to Ceres. We tried to tell them to turn back. I really hope they listened.
My 5 cents worth:
I wish Matroosberg sold coffee and at least some hot food while we were in the queue!

Incredible to see all the snow. The 4X2 trail to drive was a challenge but wonderful to be able to do. Plan for a whole day out if you are interested in seeing the deep snow, as it takes a while to get high up the mountain. And if you can, buy your tickets the previous day as the queues get very very long on weekends in the morning.

It was great news having snow fall near Cape Town. During covid, any great news is welcomed. It was five days after the snow fell but our first day as a family which we were able to get out which was a Friday. So Padkos “road food” was made for the 2,5 hours road trip. It was a sunny day so we were worried that the snow may have melted. There about 6 people in the queue but this was very efficiently handled. The more off road your vehicle the closer one would be able to drive to the snow. Our all road vehicle took us half way so we had a 20 minute walk and there it was, the snow.
Not tons of snow but a fair amount

A very beautiful place to visit definitely a must see in the winter time with all the white mountains around and seeing snow for the first time priceless. The only thing i will advise you to do is use a vehicle with 4x4 or 2x4 a normal vehicle can drive on the roads but is a little bit rough
