Lovely Market! - Fantastic Food offer and great Organic Veg offer. Wine, beers and ciders are reasonably priced. Food offer is very wide - some dishes are very pricey ie Lamb Shank at R170 but it was a great meal. We sat outside with our pooch and can see that in the Summer they would benefit from more seating outside. Covid protocols are being adhered - they need to watch the numbers inside the venue though1

1st the steampunk decor impress you on arrival. Then the live music adds to the atmosphere. Various food stalls, ample seating and parking. The steam train arrives in all its glory, and then the passengers join the crowd inside. So close by - it is just over Sir Lowry's pass, but it feels out of this world!

Its amazing how much detail went into the design of this building. Its worth the drive to come and have a look at the design. There is beautiful designed heaters for the winter and fans that looked like second world war plane propellors.
When we visited there was a good band playing anf there is food for every type of appetite.

Go to Elgin if you want to experience apartheid, like in the good old days. Racist Manager Roger suggested to my wife and young children to go and sit outside in the rain when he was asked about seating. Patrons also extremely racist. White patrons dont want you to sit at the same table as them. Elgin, where racism is alive and well.

Just another flea market in a fancy building. If you’ve been to one flea market, you’ve been to them all. Mostly Chinese imports being resold at fancy prices.
Much the same with the fast food outlets.
The only thing that makes it more appealing is the venue itself, which is beautiful, and seemingly wasted on a commonly flea market.

I give this market 5 stars as all the stalls use proper plates and cutlery. This created work for people and not loads of rubbish, single use plastic cutlery, and polystyrene containers.
We enjoy getting small plates of different cuisines and the pizza is always a feature. Previously I had some tofu and falafel which was enjoyable.

It's worth taking an early Saturday morning drive with the whole family to the Elgin railway market, less than an hour from Cape Town, and watch the steam train pull in. The kids will especially find this fascination and there's plenty more to keep the kids entertained while there. The market was relatively quiet the morning we arrived and although we missed the arrival of the steam train at about 11 AM, I can imagine that the place will be quite busy once it's arrived. So go early!
Although mostly pricey for us locals, I've had time to leisurely walk around the clothing shops and found some really great bargains. We also enjoyed the most amazing fudge and homemade pies and we will definitely be back even if it's just for the good food and wine. In addition to the food and wine, the architecture is a marvel and the place has a lovely atmosphere.
At around R500/R500 it's worth the trip down memory lane with a steam train ride from Cape Town to the Market.
I hope you eat all the fudge and pie and lots of wine on your trip,

We visited the venue twice over the weekend. I liked it and found the atmosphere friendly and fun. Great music on both visits although the "one man band" on the Sunday was outstanding. Our friends are music lovers and know their stuff, they applauded him with every piece that he played. The food was good and the prices not too steep. The ladies found stuff to buy and we could listen to good music.

Visiting the Elgin market serves two purposes. You get to travel a scenic route to step into a beautiful venue and then you get to pick between over w dozen vendors serving international and local foods. You will find bubble tea, gin, cider, raw juice. Then you can eat Asian, Middle Eastern, American, Indian, South Afrirican too.
It gets crowded, which makes for ordering and moving around a bit of a challenge. But, not alot beats a food market in an old railway station!

The atmosphere is welcoming in this unique venue with stallholders for food and knickknacks. But it is the design and decor that is stunning. The art nouveau structure with an industrial slant has a charming steampunk feel. The most impressive feature of all is the air circulation system. A diverse selection of gigantic ceiling fans ensure that the temperature is regulated, whether it is a winter or summer day. That all being said, the selection of foods from the stallholders was delightful. We chose from 4 different cuisines and everything was delicious. Relatively speaking, though, the food prices are quite high.
