History of this town

Museum is a worthwhile work in progress if you are interest in history. Graciously being nurtured by Miemsie van Wyk. I commend her.

Fabulous museum, well worth a visit. Enjoyed all the exhibits, especially the steam train. Can recommend a visit to learn about the history of Calvinia.

What a surprise
Sep 2019
We went into the Calvinia Museum as it was next door to our hotel. What a lovely surprise. The curator was so informative and the exhibits are very fantastic. Unfortunately we did not have enugh time to do it thoroughly but this is a definite "must do" in Calvinia.

Fascinating insight into Calvinia's history
Dec 2018 • Couples
We did not expect to find such interest in a museum that is far larger than appears on entering. One important focus is the previous large Jewish community in the town. The history of the merino sheep for which the area is famous is also a prominent feature. There are numerous exhibits of clothing, furniture and tools from previous centuries. They have even brought in the steam train that was used specifically to open up trade with the town. It is also remarkable that the museum has been created from donations only. The museum is continuously being improved by dedicated staff. I believe this is the second largest museum in the Northern Cape.

We were totally “blown away” by this museum! The passion & enthusiasm of the curator shows in all aspects of the museum. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit & highly recommend a visit as we learnt so much about Calvinia & its history.

Charming museum

The Calvinia museum has as would be expected, a lot of info about the original inhabitants of the area. That includes the early indigenous peoples, the Boer settlers and other like the Jewish community that arrived in the early 1900s

There is also a lot of information about sheep farming in the area.

When in Calvinia this is a worthwhile visit.

A "must" place to visit if you are in Calvinia
Apr 2017 • Couples
Although we spent one night in Calvinia, we made a special effort to visit the Museum which is housed in the old Jewish Synagogue. Entrance is free and all the Exhibits are very carefully laid out and well cared for. You will need around one hour to see and understand all the Exhibits, but it is time well spent. The Museum gives you a real understanding as to how Calvinia came about, and the hardships the early travellers endured.

Road tripping

I was fortunate enough to visit Calvinia last year for a well known festival called " Vleisfees" and was unable to take in all the sites.
The weekend past myself and a few friends decided to go check it out, and we werent dissapointed.
It may be a small town but its rich in culture and simplicity.
The people are so friendly and accomodating a place where the finer things still matter( Beautiful night skies, fresh air etc).
We got around to checking out a little place called The Republic of Rustica very different ( all the decor is recycled goods) also got to see the infamous Post box and take in a few more spots. Didnt get round to see everything. Needless to say Will be returning again in August for " Vleisfees".
If you able to, this place is a definate stop for a holiday in nature with a difference.

History of sheep-breeding surprisingly interesting
Feb 2017
Housed in the old Jewish Synagogue, the museum has exhibitions of the Voortrekkers (early Dutch settlers) history, the Anglo-Boer Wars fought in this area, the geology of Calvinia area and a large section on the origins of sheep and sheep-cross-breeding as well as models of the different types of sheep in South Africa, whose wool export is the 5th largest in the World.
