I was very much looking forward to my guided kayaking tour with Kaskazi and had planned my last morning in Cape Town around it. I took an Uber out to their office half an hour before my scheduled start, but it was closed with a note saying no one would be back for a few hours. I called the posted number twice and got a voice mail, and left one asking if my tour was still on. (When I confirmed, the email said I would be notified of weather-related cancellation an hour before the start. I had not received a text or email.)
15 minutes pass by, and I'm supposed to be in my safety training by now. It's a bit windy/chilly so I go into the nearby gas station and explain the situation; I also want to get their wifi to get an uber, because I am stranded in this place alone. The workers there are very nice and call the Kaskazi manager. Voicemail still. I've been alone, as a young woman, at this gas station for half an hour. Not exactly safe.
I'm starting my long walk back to the hotel when a car pulls up, with a woman with short blonde hair (I didn't get her name). She's with Kaskazi so I tell her I had a guided tour scheduled to start 5 minutes ago. She says, with no apology, "you're not going out today. You know that we don't go out with one person. It has to be two in the group."
I did not know this - and I have since checked all emails and this was NEVER mentioned - and I tell her i never received a cancelation notice. She says, "well, didn't you think it's too windy to go out?" Now I'm getting mad at her rudeness, and i say shortly, "well I'm not a kayaking expert. That's why I booked a guided tour." (And it had already been canceled once due to rain, with no cancellation notice sent then either, earlier in the week. But I could tell it obviously wasn't going to happen.)
She offers me a ride back to the hotel, and I get in her car. As I still haven't received an apology and have been considerably inconvenienced, I say, "I feel like a lot of wires got crossed this morning. Why didn't you send a cancellation text as promised?"
She says, "well if you're going to get mad and throw your toys...."
SERIOUSLY???? How incredibly nasty, given the clear ineptitude that led to this situation. She eventually gave an apology that didn't feel entirely sincere and offered me a free trip for whenever I'm back in Cape Town.
Which is great because I haven't seen enough of that gas station yet.
